Happy Birthday John Dawson Winter III

A Happy 65th to the man, and Beaumont native, who put Texas Blues guitarists on the map, Johnny Winter. This first video is kind of rough around the edges, but for a completely spontaneous jam session with a bass player who had never heard the song he was about to play, it's still awsome.

These next two feature the band he had when he was based in Austin, Uncle John Turner on drums, and a very young, pre-Stevie Ray Vaughan Tommy Shannon on bass.

Happy Birthday, Johnny. You've given me and many others decades of listening pleasure.

I think he's working as a Walmart greeter now. The guy certainly looks like I would imagine Winter does these days with shorter hair.

Nice. Actually, Johnny is still touring, although years battling drug and alcohol addiction problems have taken their toll on his health and his playing ability. I think he hit his nadir about 5-10 year ago, but he does seem to have improved over the past couple of years, however. Here's to hoping he continues improving, and sticks around many more years. He is a Texas Treasure.
