HAPPINESS WON'T BE LUBBOCK IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR

The very possibility that Sept. 24, 2022, will be the last time the Texas Longhorns head 'em up and move 'em out on the cattle drive to Lubbock for a South Plains pigskin duel against Texas Tech has me a tad uneasy. It's enough to make the late, great Buddy Holly, Lubbock's greatest export, turn over in his grave. Had you suggested a few years ago that the UT-TTU rivalry was nearing an end, I would've quoted the rock'n'roll savant from one of his greatest songs: "That'll be the day."

Tech has dished the pain to Texas periodically on the Caprock, with particularly crushing wins in '74, '86, '98, and '02 but most notably in 2008.

Good thing it’s not a cold game later in the year on the windy plains.

Strange things happen in Lubbock. The ball takes weird bounces. There’s almost a Notre Dame—like luck to the Raiders, and bad luck to the visitors, at AT&T Jones Stadium.

A few years ago I posted Texas's record in Lubbock in some thread. The hand wringing that goes on around here when Texas is headed there is unfounded. A few terrible losses here and there but an overwhelmingly good win % for Texas in Lubbock.

Well, at least visiting fans will be treated to plenty of warm hospitality by a multitude of friendly and sober Red Raider fans.

:tech:
QB
Donovan Smith
from Las Vegas, NV
6’5”
230 lbs
64.5% completion %
7.1 yards average
7 TD
5 INT
Has been sacked 10 times (and hasn’t even started all games)

Rather pedestrian passing numbers. Looks like he hits a lot of short passes. Big dude who could probably move the chains on QB sneaks, draws and other QB runs. Takes lots of sacks, and Tech was worried about their OL going into the season. This would be a good game to really bring the pressure and smoke their shaky OL.

Tech’s entire existence is obsessing over Texas. They really believe we’re fierce rivals. They live and breathe this game every day of their lives. Saturday is a holy day of obligation to them. I hope Sark can get Card ready.

The problem won’t be our defense. Will Card be able to handle the environment? Hope he’s not too shaky under the bright lights.

NC State throttled Tech’s offense way down. I think we’ll do the same. The beauty of our O is that we can fall back on our run game against all but the best defenses.

Smith reminds me a lot of the 18 Wheeler, Tyron Swoops.
