Hanging Curtains

This is frustrating the hell out of me. I need tips, help, etc.

I can not find a spot to drill. I have a stud finder. However, the damn thing beeps all over the place except far as **** away from the window. The curtain rods would look ridiculous if I put them that far out.

Anyway, a quick run down would be nice. Your experiences, tips, thoughts...whatever you have.

Thanks in advance!

I just hung some curtains for my Mom over Christmas. Depends on what type of wall you have and how heavy the curtains are. I've found that you don't necessarily have to drill into a stud. I've used those plastic expansion shields and they seem to work fine. Just mark to holes for the brackets, drill, hammer in the shields and mount the brackets.

Just mark the spot where you want them. Drill a small hole at that spot. You should be able to tell for sure after drilling the small hole if you are drilling into a stud or not. If there's a stud there, just screw the brackets straight into. If there is no stud, use a hollow wall anchor type thing (plastic expanding sleeve and screw).

OK, here's the poop.

Above the window, for the entire length of the window is the "header", which is a wood beam that spans the window opening to support the weight of the roof. Depending on the width of the window, it can be a 4x4, 4x6, or all the way to a 4x12 or larger. On each side of the header will be a stud, known as the "king stud". the header is nailed to the king stud. Inside the king stud, toward the window, will be the 'trimmers", which run from the bottom of the window (sill) to the header. They are nailed to the king studs. So, on each side of the window you have 3 inches of stud to work with, and solid wood all above the window for it's lenght.
