Hacker golf club suggestions

Any suggestions out there for a decent set of clubs for mid 90s golfer who knows what he needs to do (practice more, take lessons) but most likely won't but will instead continue to hack around & enjoy 5 - 10 rounds a year?

I've been looking to replace my almost 15 year old POS Spaldings my ex bought me (under $200 for the full set plus bag). I'm not blaming my clubs for most of my flaws (tend to break my right wrist too early on takeaway & have problems maintaining my spine angle through impact) & don't think that I will buy myself a better game through technology, but I do want to enjoy the game more & want to buy an easy to hit, forgiving set of clubs (irons, SW & LW, driver) for under $500. One of the things I hate most about my current irons is that even a good shot doesn't feel good; the ball comes off the face w/ a dead feel & clunky sound.

I haven't had my swing speed measured in a couple years but it's average at best. I'm a short knocker w/ an average drive of about 250, 9 iron about 120. My mis-hits tend to be blocked to the right. My longest iron in my bag right now is a 5 because I couldn't consistently get anything else off the ground.

Right now I'm looking at the Adams A2 hybrid irons from rockbottomgolf. Any feedback is appreciated (and again, I know...practice & lessons). Thanks.

I got myself some Spaldings to screw around with a few years ago. My father, who shoots in the low 80s, played with them once and told me they were total junk. I guess you get what you pay for.

I hadn't thought about going the used club route, JM. Might have to consider that.

Yeah, my current clubs are dogs. But they were given to me as a gift from someone who knew nothing about golf other than the fact that I liked to play from time to time. I must say that I do like the 3 wood and hit it better than any other club, especially my driver. I've also got an old Lynx Predator SW that I hit pretty well and a hand me down 60 deg wedge that may never leave my bag just because I know that I can swing as hard as possible & the ball will go straight up & carry no farther than 70 yards.

Used Callaway clubs are avaialble on their website for a variety of prices. They are near the Austin airport so you may be able to pick them up and save shipping.

My dad has the Adams irons you are talking about and he loves them. He is about a 90-100 player. But for you I wouldn't go new if I didn't have to, look at used Ping or Callaway.

I came into this thread expecting to see PO1D acting like a complete jackass, telling us how we all suck and need to practice 10 hours a day before we buy new clubs.

To the question though; The used route is can be a good idea if you find the right buy, alot of people end up buying a nice set only to find they can't make it out but once a year and end up selling them cheap. I myself however got a set of cobra irons (4-G) for about 400$ at Golfsmith a few years ago that I love.

It never hurts to go up to GS and just hit their demo clubs into the net to see what a difference the technology can make, and it might help you decide on what "style" you like. Many companies make different looking clubs (Pings always look off to me, hince I don't like them as much) and the new hybrid sets from Adams and other companies now can be a huge help.

An off topic question now. Does anyone know a course around town that isn't ridiculously priced and doesn't have 5 groups backed up on the tee at all hours of the day? My buddy and I used to drive down to Plum Creek but they raised their rates quite a bit.

Go to a Ping dealer and find our which color dot fits you best.

Then find a used set of that color. Gotta have a set that fits you well at any skill level

Concur. Go get a set of used Pings or Callaways and get them re-gripped. I bought a used set of Pings and played with them for over 10 years; never a problem. Got a new set of Callaways 5 years ago. Now, I use the Pings as a spare set for friends; also, I left them in a remote corporate apt for practice at a range when I commuted out-of-state for work for several months.
