H Mahan and the PGA

Looks like it may be a Tiger runaway.

Does anyone think Hunter has a chance to win it?

I know Hunter Mahan is from the Dallas area, but he didn't attend UT, so why do we care whether he can win or not? Were I you, I'd care far more about Hunter's Ryder Cup partner Justin Leonard who is playing for his spot on the President's Cup team and is blowing up at +3 through 12. Justin sits 10th, the final spot on the team, and will fall out if Mahan has a good enough tournament this week. So I say screw Hunter Mahan, as every Texas fan should dude! Tiger looks strong, but there is a host of Europeans right on his tail. It might be Paddy and Tiger again on Sunday. Paddy looks like one guy who doesn't melt when faced with the red shirt. I don't think Justin Leonard will get picked by Fred Couples, so Justin had better sack up and make the cut and play well over the weekend. Otherwise your Hunter Mahan may force Justin to the sideline...... Justin Leonard has sucked in the Majors this year. Apart from a top ten (T8) at the British Open, he has went mc, mc, and sure looks like another mc. That won't show Fred Couples much right there. Justin was brilliant in the Ryder Cup last fall. He is exceedingly well-spoken and represents UT with a ton of class. If he can find a second major win in the next decade, he is a likely Hall of Famer, the best short knocker, maybe ever. Justin has won the US amateur, a British Open, and a Player's Championship. Let's hope a Texas Ex can win the damned PGA. Go to the Southern Cal website and woof about Mahan

Happily I can report the Justin Leonard birdied the final three holes to end his first round at a manageable (+1) 73. Justin goes out early today in what should be the more favorable weather. Assuming Mahan went to Okie Light isn't a bad guess. USC seems a dark horse school for a hot shot golfer. Unfortunately, for us, now days so does Texas. John Fields has done nothing for UT's golf team. You'd think our legends like Crenshaw, Kite, and Leonard would band together and demand a change. After David Gossett and Brad Elder, I cannot name a UT golfer of note who has matriculated under Fields. Lord knows there are a ton of great junior golfers from Texas. Why the heck does UT struggle to land some of them?

Earth to Indy - we don't only care about UT guys. Mahan is a great up and coming player. there's nothing wrong with rooting for the guy. asking if Mahan has a chance isn't rooting against JL or anyone else.

NorthCoast - he went to USC and then transferred to Okie Lite.

I just read a blog on CNNSI saying the wind is really kicking up. The writer said a gust of wind moved all the divot sod on the practice range 15 feet-mentioned that he suspected afternoon scores to soar. Incidently Justin just bogied a par 5 and sits at +2 through 12. He sits at T62 at the moment. He may well need scores to soar to make the cut with another bogey. Hunter Mahan, Tiger, Paddy, etc. have yet to tee off, and will need to play their arses off to hold the line under par..........

Grrrrrrrr, Justin Leonard shot 75, to miss the cut by (likely 1 or 2 shots). He definitely drops to 12 in the standings, and has no case for being a Captain's pick. Justin missed the cut in 3 of 4 majors this year. It also puts him behind the eight ball to make Ryder Cup next year. Only the Majors count toward points to make next year's Ryder Cup squad.

Terrific last round - full of suspense and great shots. Give Yang his due - he stood toe-to-toe with Tiger and never flinched. The 3-hybrid shot on 18 was a thing of beauty!

Yup, good job! A story to tell your kids and grandkids. You have beaten Tiger twice. Not many can say that.
