Gym suggestions

Now that i'm done with UT, i'm looking for a gym here in Austin..around the Campus/Downtown area. It looks my choices are PureAustin, Golds, and 24 Hour fitness. It doesn't have to be that fancy, but i'd like a pretty decent selection of free weights, machines, etc. I was leaning towards Golds or Pure, because I like to run on Town Lake after my workouts. Also, I tend to lift early in the morning..so if it isn't that crowded around then that'd be a plus too. Thanks in advance...

Pure is by far the most expensive. Nice place though

24 Hr Fitness in the Hancock Center is where I workout. The scenery is unreal if you don't mind looking at hot college chicks working out. They have a pool, basketball court and solid amount of free weights and machines. Another plus is being able to workout at any 24 Hr Fitness anywhere. They have some sweet deals if you pay in advance. Works out to like $20/month (if not lower)

Used to workout at Gold's. Not a bad gym but I prefer 24 Hr Fitness by far. In my experience there were too many meatheads.

If you end up with Gold's -
KEEP EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF PAPER THEY GIVE YOU REGARDING YOUR MEMBERSHIP!!!!

Otherwise, you could end up getting screwed over if you decide to cancel of change your membership somehow.

JB - can you explain? i've cancelled, re-joined, cancelled, and rejoined again. AND added my wife for super cheap. all within the last 5 years.

When i checked around, the Y was pretty expensive. Dont you have to pay more to have access to all 24 hours? I thought you were only paying for the same gym, but it went up 4 or 5 bucks to have access to it all. If you work somewhere, definitely try to get the corporate rate. All they really need is a pay stub. I used an old UT paystub and got the state employee rate, but i guess it has to be reasonably within signing up for membership.

not sure what people are expecting at the Hancock location to consider it in bad (or not good) condition

it's clean and well maintained. Plus, it's a gym. Does it need to look pretty?

my wife and I pre-paid for 3 years (1.5 through original agreement). We can use any gym in the country (although most are central and west US). Ultimately costs us under $40/month for the both of us (if you were to break it out). After the 3 years is up, contract is month to month and cost goes down to $16/month for the both of us. Yes, that's $8/month per person to work out at a gym. That's f'in ridiculous.

**** golds. they WILL find a way to screw you. Case in point: They had my credit card number on the account of another guy whose last name was one letter off. plain lazy ******* who couldn't get their kinesiology degree.

it just depends on the rates. I had multiple part time jobs. I tried the AISD rate and then the state rate. The state rate ended up being cheaper.

Never had a single problem whatsoever w/ Golds. Been working out there off and on for about 10 years, w/ about a 3 yr break in the middle. Started at the one on 183/Burnett and have been at the Bee Caves one for about 4 years now. Sometimes hit the Ben White on for spin class, but the BC one is clean, new, hardly has anyone there most of the time.

If anything, they've been pretty accommodating when I have changed banks. Just over $20/mo for me now.

Golds seriously f'd me over too. They charged me dues for like a year after i thought I had canceled my membership. I was told I had to send a ltter in or something to the corporate office so i did... then after a year or so they said i had to do it via certified mail.
