Guns in NBA locker rooms

I wonder what they were gambling on.................and I wonder how we would keep guns in the locker room and no one with authority knows.

If I were an NBA player living in or around D.C. I would either pack heat or hire a bodyguard or two. I would not prefer the former since handguns are illegal without a permit. He makes enough cash that he can afford a bodyguard. He's lucky he did not shoot himself in the leg!

I can relate to wanting a gun in your locker, you know, in case someone on the other team talks too much ****, or says something about your Mother or something.
BUT your own teammate??????

No law against them possessing guns, but in the locker room it is a serious violation of league rules. Stern has previously voiced his concerns with players and weapons and will likely dole out a stiff suspension/fine to both parties - perhaps more to Arenas, since this isn't his first incident..

According to ESPN just now, it is illegal to possess a firearm outside your home in DC and it is a felony to brandish a firearm with a MINIMUM penalty of 5 years in jail.

Yo dawg, bring your A game and my coin or else!!

Unbelievable, no wonder I don't watch the NBA anymore. Classless thugs!

So if you live in DC, and you want to go hunting in VA, then you can't transport your gun, because you have to leave it in your house?

I swear. I am no gun nut, and this story is pure folly, but I don't get some of the absurdist gun laws in some places. Let's make sane, rationale gun laws. I am even for trigger locks being required on ALL stored guns. But to say you can't have a gun at all outside your home etc.. wow.

Reminds me of a story I heard about when I lived in Chicago. I can't verify it, but evidently you can't have a gun in Chicago. Some guy was driving through, got pulled over for speeding or something and got his car searched. The police found a gun in his trunk.... and he got jail time for it. That is insane to me.

The guy should know the laws of the city or state he is visiting or driving through. In the Commonwealth of Virginia you are not allowed to have a radar detector of any sort in your vehicle. The law may have changed since I left, however. Anyway, you cannot "drive through" Virginia with one even if your state allows you to have one. It cannot even be turned off.

I know they used to confiscate them and you did not get it back. You also got a nice penalty or fine as well as ticket. It is up to you to know the laws. They also had large signs entering the state telling one of the law.

The law in D.C. is so that people don't carry weapons around the city. If you have a rifle, lots of gear and your hunting license and get pulled over for some reason, you should be okay. If you have a sawed off shot gun, a .357 and stuff like that with no hunting gear, you are screwed.

Give the cop attitude and your trip may be delayed but you will get off of charges if you have a clean record. Yeah, this means the ones with guns are the harder criminals and the cops. I challenge you to find a difference many times between the two in the District.

You can try to get a permit but it is tough if you don't have money or know people. These are two situations likely not tough for Arenas to bypass if he tried or merely asked. I applied for a permit for my Desert Eagle and got it turned down. I was moving to D.C. from NoVa and sold it instead of taking a chance.

I did not want something to go wrong heading to a firing range that would get me into trouble. I had the choice to not live in D.C. or sell the gun if I could not find somewhere safe and reliable to keep it outside the city.

Them's the rules.

I was done with the NBA when the league endorsed moving the Sonics to OKC.

And to go all West Mall on this thread...

How fitting is it that the US Capitol has a law that negates something that is guaranteed in the Bill of Rights?? If guns and crime are still such a problem in DC then every law-abiding citizen should be required to get a permit and carry one.

Well, if they have a license for the guns and they are licensed gun owners, it should be a much much safer environment. They would have the ability to take out a terrorist or a disgruntled benchwarmer that went postal.

More people with licensed guns, the better. Why should an NBA locker room be any different than a Luby's or a university campus?

Wash DC has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. It is almost impossible to get a 'license to carry'. These NBA guys having guns in their lockers is idiodic. I bet they don't know how to use them safely and properly. Some day, someone is going to get hurt or killed. The NBA should suspend them and fine them as well.

What has compounded the situation is Arenas joking about it with the media and pretending to point guns at his teammates on the court. I guess after the indefinite suspension the laugh is on him.

I have no doubt they knew they were not allowed to have the guns. It is common knowledge of people in the District to know. I would say in their circle for sure. I am sure it came up sometime or another.

In my circle we all knew about it and knew which people in our group had one or not. We had several in our club for protection on closing up and prior to deposits where we hired 3 off duty cops to come by and escort us to the bank. it was like a diamond delivery or something.

These dudes just did not give a **** and figured they would be above the law. Wrong. I think D.C. nails Arenas and Co. as much as they can to set an example and to not be ridiculed for being weak in comparison to the NYC case with Burress.
