Guiness Recomendations

I've been drinking this lately. Anybody got any recomendations for this type of beer?

I'm trying to quit smoking, so since I've never had this I can drink it without wanting a cigarette. So I'm trying to stay far away from any light, medium beers. I used to drink mostly IPA's and generic cheap beer.

Murphy's stout is very good as well. I would also recommend Young's Double Luxury Chocolate Stout.
If you are in a town with a microbrewery you could try their stout, or even a porter, which is just a bit 'lighter.'

So, I need to be looking for stouts or porters then?

Thanks for the help, I'm a bit out of my knowledge level here.

Another great beer is Left Hand Brewery's Milk Stout. Are you just wanting to avoid lights and IPA's? What about branching out to some Trappist ales - Orval, Koningshoeven, and Chimay may be in the cards.

Had the Leinenkugal 1888 last night. Very nice.

I'm trying the Double Chocolate tonight. There is a pretty decent beer/wine store in my parking lot. But alot the more specialty beers and in the cooler. So I've bought many of yall's recomendadtion, just haven't drunk them yet.

So I take it by your signature I should really try the Chimay?

Had the double chocolate doing the football game. Excellent choice. Will definetely buy again.

Tried Murphy's Stout last night.

Definitely not Guiness. But, for 64 ox at $5.99 not a bad price for what you get.

So here is what I tried this week (in order of how much I liked them)

1)Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout
2)Young's Double Chocolate.
3)Shiner Commemorator
4)Murphy's Stout

Would highly recommend the first 2. Shinner was okay.

I have a 1a and 1b; I cannot decide whether I like Chimay White or Orval better because they're both fantastic! If I had to decide based grocery store purchasing, I usually lean toward Orval.

I'm working my way up the prices on all the recomendations, so I haven't hit the Chimay just yet. I may do that when my girlfirend is out of town next week. That way she doesn't ask me how much I just spent on one bottle of beer!

At my local grocery store; Ayinger, Chimay and Orval are $3.29 a bottle. I don't consider that terribly expensive since bars are charging $3-4 for flavorless Bud Light or Miller Lite. And they have a higher alcohol content, so you get a quicker buzz. Plus, I limit my consumption to special occasions, nice meal, or rough day at work.

The problem I have is that my fiancee loves these beers as much as I do and if I get myself a bottle, she wants one also! We all have our vices, her's is cosmetics and mine is beer.

Really? Thats not bad at all. Thats the price range I'm looking for. But all I've seen are the large bottles (pint and a half??) for about $12.00

get on flight to Dublin. Tell cab driver to take you the Coachman's Inn 5 minutes from the airport. Enjoy multiple pints of Guinness as it should be served. Get flight home.

If you like the porters, I'd recommend Anchor Porter. For the Belgian ales, I really like the Maredsous 10. Corsendock is also good if you like Chimay

it's nothing like the other recommendations you've gotten (which are all good choices(, but you might try an Aventinus. Easily my favorite beer. Has an unusual flavor (and a real kick).

People usually love it or hate it. I love it.

Good luck kicking the cigs.

^^^^ Thanks, its been over a month. And during that time, I've tried about 25 different beers.

Some I loved, some I liked. None I could complain about.

Tried the Shinner Hefe last night. Nice.

I love Spec's, but in Austin Grapevine Market has the best selection of Belgian beers around. Not sure if you're in Austin or not.

Another Stout you might like is Young's Oatmeal Stout. And you could try Sam Smith's Taddy Porter.

New Beligum Brewery makes a dark beer that I enjoy called "1554."

And then you can always search for my Holy Grail of Belgian beers, my favorite beer on the planet, called Leffe Brune. You can find the Leffe Blonde just about anywhere, but I haven't seen the Leffe Brune in Austin for many years.
