Guero's: What should I eat?

Yes, Hornfans, here is your opportunity to choose my meal for me. I'm about to head out to Guero's but haven't been before... I usually get advice from the waiter in these situations, but I have a little time before I leave, so I thought I'd see if y'all had any suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

i believe the presidente special, or something like that is what you should order. they renamed it when clinton ordered it.

maudies is allright for food, but atmosphere at gueros is ten times better. plus the food is great and margaritas are better.

either tacos al pastor or the enchiladas santa fe with breast of chicken and red sauce. as someone mentioned, their enchiladas aren't anything to write home about, but the santa fe as i've described are good.

Chips and salsa??? Beer??

Tacos al pastor. If you don't want that, then order the tacos al pastor. Or, if you're in the mood for something different, I'd recommend the tacos al pastor.

Comprende?

i've found the more ritas i have before dinner, the better the food tastes. that said, avoid the enchiladas at all costs....awful.

had the tacos al pastor. was good, but not very filling. the salsas were good, the staff was fairly rude.

i give it a B-. will probably go back, but certainly wouldn't get excited about it.

thanks for the recommendations, though--it is wonderful to know you can turn to hornfans for good advice in any situation.

so are in the camp I've been in for a while now, that wonders why some have this place at the very top of their austin tex-mex list?

i just don't get it.

I don't get why people love this place so much. It's fairly random.

I've tried it several times thinking I just missed something. Won't go back.

The appeal of the place, IMO, is the atmosphere. The food is ok, but if I have friends in town or am looking for a fun place to go grab a few drinks, Guerro's is where i like to go.

Lots of really hot women in there as well. That doesn't hurt.

As for my favorites on the menu: Al Pastor or the fish tacos.

The amazing thing to me was the people busting on poor ole Matt's El Rancho, but think Guero's is food of the God's. They are both decent. For texmex I'd probably give the nod to Matt's over this place. But for atmosphere, margaritas, and hanging out with my friends Guero's would be better to me. Either way it ain't great, but it isn't bad as long as ou avoid the enchilada's they suck.

Highly overrated, IMO.

I had the El Presidente plate - very mediocre stuff, and the wife didn't care much for hers either. House ritas were very average.

Chuy's & Trudy's kicks butt over this place. Matt's is better too.

I think the thing with Guero's, Matt's, and Trudy's is that you have to order what they do really well- which isn't much.

Matt's El Rancho - Brisket tacos
Guero's - Fish tacos
Trudy's - Migas (or better yet, the migas enchiladas with verde sauce)

Straying away from these items is a risky proposition, IMHO.

The Guero's draw has always been a mystery. Lived here all my life, and it's one of the most overrated restaurants I've encountered. Only average food, and really watered down margaritas. If your primary goal is to see Mike Judge or Luke Wilson on occasion, then it may be your deal. If decent food and drink are a priority, seek out another place. There are so many more options.

I agree with Jackie. I don't "get " Guero's. It's like a Mickey D's in a field of great steakhouses..... so many more great Tex Mex places to go.

It's not "traditional" TexMex. That may be reason enough to slam the place, but not in my mind. I think the margs (rocks) are exceptional, the food ranges from good to very good, and the scenery can be just plain outstanding.

Just about every restaurant has a few dishes you stay away from. At Guero's, if you stick with the fish tacos, the chicken especial, the tacos al pastor, or the stacked enchildas (blue corn tortillas with a fried egg), I don't really see how you can go wrong.

Plus, the place just has a good vibe.
