Just went to Albertsons. They have signs limiting purchase of beef pork and poultry.
So now people will make several trips and still horde
But our growers are in dire straits
If I understand correctly, the old Monfort plant in Greeley has been cranked back up, as have two of Johnny Tyson's plants. That Greeley plant was really large at one time.
This meat shortage gives me a better argument to Hunt more. Hope they let us Hunt this fall. I can just see the TP&WD shutting that down. Sure hope not. I grilled a bunch of pork sausage patties last week. We'll be eating that for another two weeks. We froze the left overs.
If meat processing centers are shutting down, it makes sense that you'd see shortages and rationing. You might see more hunting, but I also think you'll see hunters and farmers start selling meat directly to customers.
My wife back from store. Plenty of meat though there are restrictions on how much you can buy. Here’s why there will not be a run on meat:
- it’s more expensive than TP
- how many people have spare freezer space?
You can only store meat for 5 days in a fridge. And if you own a spare freezer, it’s likely full anyway.
Good thing if you live in Austin, all the vegans and vegetarians, mean there isn't much demand for meat. If Round Rock runs out I will just drive South a bit.
The price reductions will vary, but Tyson (TSN) told CNNsome beef items sold to grocery stores, restaurants and other customers could be discounted by 20% to 30% through Saturday.
"We're doing this because we want to help keep beef on family tables across our nation, especially as our beef plants return from reduced levels of production," said Gary Mickelson, the company's senior director of public relations.
Tyson's announcement comes as American grocery store price tags are soaring. Overall, the price of groceries grew 2.6%, including seasonal adjustments, in April. That was the biggest increase from one month to the next since 1974, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
