Grill not hot enough

We got a new grill and it only gets up to around 450 degrees, which is not hot enough for me to sear meats with. Sometimes it gets up to 500 after im done cooking and burning it off, but never before even if i leave on a long time before cooking.

Is there a way to make it hotter from the get go ?
Thanks.

I guessing charcoal grill? (the burning off statement...)

You can try to improve airflow by "elevating" where the coals sit. Buy some of that thick wire mesh they sell at home depot and bolt it into your grill near the bottom. Throw the coals on top of the mesh so that there is a gap between your coals and the bottom of the grill for air to circulate. The added air flow should help to get those coals burning hotter faster.

I did a really bad job of explaining what I mean but hopefully you get the idea.

I'm assuming a gas grill because he talks about leaving it on.

If it's a gas grill and it's new, you might be having a problem with a totally idoitic nanny state imposed "safety" feature in your inlet hose that is designed to shut off the gas in case for some reason the gas grill runs away and starts spewing flames all to hell and back. It's kind of like a blowout preventer on oil and gas wells except for gas grills. If you get too much flow it stops it down, and you don't get the heat you want.

our new gas grill worked fine for a month and then this absurd contraption kicked in and we could get nothing more than moderate heat out of the thing. Went to Wal-mart (foiler of stupid nanny state ideas) and got a replacement hose without the stupid thing on it and now you can turn our gas grill up to thermonukear.

Get thee to Wal-mart and get you a new non nanny state inlet hose and your problem should be solved.

Yes it is gas. But the gas comes from the house as opposed to a tank under the grill...not sure if that matters or not.

Thanks.

if its gas-
make sure the burners are off. then turn the tank, then the burners. then light
If the burners are on and then you turn the tank it can be a problem for webers I believe. Don't know why

burners on causing a problem for Webers is being caused by that damnfool blowout preventer.

if it's a natural gas grill, i.e. gas comes from the house, then I don't know about that blowout preventer thing on those, are the gas jets natural gas ones, the propane and nat gas ones are differen sizes. I'd ask the dealer where you bought it about this.
