I know I'm spoiled and I know the Rivals star-rating system is flawed at best, but it's so "Un-Texas" to be hoping and wishing a 3-star player would re-commit to us. Not saying this is what you're doing Prodigal...I'm catching myself doing it.
Tell him he can come back if he brings Knox. I'm joking. Actually both may have burned their bridges and unless there is need, there are very few slots available.
This is somewhat ironic given the fact that he decommitted from Texas last spring.
Hopefully we will not give him a second chance to do that. Not to mention the fact that a 3-star RB isn't exactly our biggest need and scholarship numbers are really tight.
He's a slower Joe Bergeron. And that's against weaker HS competition than Bergeron faced when he was at N. Mesquite.
I think he would make a good Cody Johnson type. Short yardage and soften up the D-Line. I wouldn't worry too much if we didn't get him in the 2nd go-round. Knox was the prize that I wanted.
Bridges are burned for me as if that matters. He was kind of arrogant when he decommitted and was all talk along with Knox when they were committed. They professed their love for UT and repeatedly confirmed their commitments and a few days later bailed out. He acted like he was a 5 star recruit and that he was too good for Texas after stringing them along. This is based on an interview I watched at some all star practice session where he was mugging for the cameras. I'd pass on him even if Texas needed a RB.
He chose L'ville over Texas twice now. Once when he de-committed and again when Strong moved to Texas. All recruits have to reassess when a move like that happens and decide if they want to stay put with the new coach or maybe follow the original coach. It's not common to follow, but it does happen and is a decision that is made. He didn't want us back then, now L'ville doesn't want him. Tell me again why we want to pursue him and his 3-stars afterwards?
UT pursued Gresham because he and Knox (who was at that time rated the top OT in Texas) were team mates and professed a strong desire to play together in college. They chose UT so UT offered them both. Then Knox decided he wanted to take a number of other visits and UT balked at that. Knox decommitted and eventually committed to Ohio State. IIRC Gresham stayed with UT for a while, then I can't remember if he committed to Ohio State first or not but he eventually chose Louisville. So he was basically a package deal with Knox but even after Knox bailed, UT kept their word with Gresham until he bailed too.
I thought Gresham bounced around a bit and at one time was going to TCU.... hell that might have been a different kid. He burned the bridge under Mack but under Strong... if we need him... hell take a look. with just under a month to cement a signing class... I would keep all options on the table. I thought this kid had some good power running highlights.
2014 class has a very good RB in Catalon, another good one in Shorter (although I don't know his current situation after being injured) and ATH D'onta Foreman who might be a RB.
Brown and Bergeron have another year and Gray has one or two years left depending on going pro early.
Donta Foreman will end up playing D. Probably a backup linebacker type. We took him as part of the class to seal Armanti. We don't have much need for RBs who run a 4.7.
I'm interested to see if Catalon will perform better than BJ at TCU. BJ was the more highly-touted of the two, but he seems to have trouble getting a lot of carries.
I think the 2015/16 classes will tell us a lot more about our RB situation. If we can get some sort of zone scheme going this year with more QB runs, opening things up for guys like Brown and Gray to do their thing, then I think we'll score some better RBs in future classes. We probably wouldn't have signed Jamaal Charles if we didn't show what we could do with VY in the backfield. That might mean that Heard will have to play early, but if that means wins, then I'm all for it.
Apparently from OrangeBloods, new OL coach Joe Wickline is scheduled to make an in-home visit with Gresham's former high school team mate OL Demetrius on Thursday.

Remember Terrell Davis, the Denver running back that helped Elway finally get a Super Bowl win? He was a 4.7 40 guy.

He was also an unheard-of gimp who basically did nothing to make LBSU or UGA any better while he was attending those universities. Mike Shanahan took a risk on him and it paid off. I'd love for a kid like Donta to prove me wrong, but I think we're pretty much set at RB, at least until the 2015 kids sign with us. And they will, if a healthy J-Gray produces and Malcolm Brown keeps up the effort.
I think Gresham will do well at SMU. He's a Zach Line type, and they sorely missed Line in 2013.
