Any thoughts on this place? What to eat, etc..

I don't like their menu as they try to serve everything under the sun. I prefer my BBQ places to specialize in BBQ.

Have not read many good reviews. The good things about this place appear to be the atmosphere and NOT the food.

The wife has a meeting there with her grad. advisor and I was going to try it. However, I dio not like what I am seeing.

I'm from Austin, and currently live walking distance from GM and have been there only a handful of times. GM definitely has a regular crowd (people chatting it up in the bar area) and a cool outdoor picnic area but the food is just ok. They typically have good specials and in my experience have had good service. Definitely not my first choice for bbq though.

It's better than the county line, but that's about it.

It wouldn't make my top Austin top 10 barbeque list, and that's only the inside the city limits list.

Its not a good BBQ place. I cant imagine it being in anyones top 10 in the city. When I have to eat there because it is someone else's choice, I find the CFS to be serviceable.

Thier brisket is decent enough, especially if you get the moist cut.

The birds are bad, and so is the ham. Very dry, IMHO.

Ribs are decent.

Sausage is allsome. I really really really enjoy their sausage.

Would have loved to try the sausage...oh well..I didn't venture out of my comfort zone. So, I basically ordered what they couldn't screw up. I got the chopped beef sammich and the potato with grilled chicken.

Well, I was dead wrong. If you are like me, you expect potatoes at BBQ places to be ******* huge. Hell, the price was huge at over $5.50 but the potato was only medium size. It was a damn joke. The chicken was very dry and overcooked as well. It was horrible.
The sammich was pretty good but I love chopped beef, so I may not be a good judge. It was a good size for over $3.50 and few chunks of fat or tough meat.
The service was not bad but hardly good. Just brought my food and my check. I was able to order quickly and the food arrived fast enough.
The 3.5 yr old darling got the grilled cheese with fries. More importantly, she had a blast. They have plenty of chalk outside for the kiddos to draw everywhere.
In conclusion, decent vist but I will not go back unless I need to keep kids entertained.

Well, damn, I told ya not to eat their birds. Seems not much has changed with that.

If you go back, try the sausage. Seriously, that **** is good. Or just get some to go, just to give it a try.

I was already at the restaurant when you post your rec Snoop. I love some good sausage, so I will go back and try it, to go.

I love the Green Mesquite. It is ONE of the reasons I live in Austin. But it is all about the atmosphere, which was better before it burned and they rebuilt it. The food is okay. The patio and live music are the draw.

I like Green Mesquite, but I don't consider it a "serious" BBQ joint. The is food is passable and I'm just as likely to order the catfish or jambalaya as a BBQ plate/sandwich. It's a cool place to sit outside, have a few beers with your food, and listen to some live music. Now that John is out of business in Austin, when I want real BBQ, I drive to Lockhart.
