some of my favorite moments as a longhorn fan have come against Nebraska;
96 Championship
ending their home win streak in 98 then again in 02
Major to Mike Jones
and Ryan Bailey
Both of those games were nail bitters. I remember my ex and I were about to head out for the night.....both games "honey we cannot go yet"
I recall Chris Simms getting a jammed finger, running to the sidelines, having it pulled out and then running back into the game so he would not be taken out or have to call time out.
Sitting in the far endzone I couldnt tell for just a second if he was in bounds when he came down with the ball. Went crazy when I realized he had. We had beaten thier tails but were still in a position to lose the game. Immediately all the Husker fans around us stuck out thier hands and said congratulations. Mack loses very few true road games, but Lincoln is still a special place to win.
2002 was arguably a season where we had more of a legit shot at a conference (and possibly national) title than 2001. We sort of blew the OU game with Reese's inability to scheme against Q. Griffin, and our inability to run the ball (or stop Kingsbury) against Tech lost our shot at the conference. We also had a few injuries late in the year (Vasher and Tubbs come to mind) that kept us closer than we should have been.
We would have punked CU in the title game had we been the South champ.
It was a truly memorable season: Simms/Redding the captains, the emergence of Derrick Johnson as the best LB to play for Texas since Nobis, the close game against OK State where Babers's first pick EVER won the game, Benson's game against ISU, and the obvious shellacking of the Aggies at home with Michael Ungar's kickass special teams plays.
We'll probably have very similar seasons from 2008-10, with the recent recruiting coups.
