"General Motors has temporarily suspended production of its Volt electric car, the company announced Friday.

GM, which is based in Detroit, announced to employees at one of its facilities that it was halting production of the beleaguered electric car for five weeks and temporarily laying off 1,300 employees.

A GM spokesman told The Hill Friday production of the Volt would resume on April 23.

"We needed to maintain proper inventory and make surethat we continued to meet market demand," GM spokesman Chris Lee said in a telephone interview.

Just a reminder of GM's prodiction march 2011
"quote from General Motor's Rob Peterson:

The Volt production launch is on schedule to build and sell every one of our 10,000 units this year. Through February, we produced over 1,800 vehicles - 925 of which have been sold at retail. Production volume will gradually increase each month throughout the year. However, over the next few months we will be shipping Volt dealer demo vehicles and vehicles to our coastal launch markets which takes longer than delivering them to nearby states. This situation should be resolved by May, after which the number of Volt's sold will rise.

There is no demand issue; ask any dealer in a launch market. This is a temporary situation. The Volt launch is on time and on target."

On target to fail

Why are we giving $7500 tax credit to the wealthiest to buy these and still it is a failure

I hae NO problem with letting this car of the leaf come to market. I have a problem with gov'tsubsidizing them for the wealthy to buy

I heard they brought in Clint Eastwood (for a substantial appearance fee) to tell the employees it was just half time in their production. Go grab some orange slices and be ready for the 2nd half...in 5 weeks

Whatever charge the Volt might have had in terms of PR was shunted to ground a long time ago.

The one Chevy car that I am quite interested in getting is the 2013 Cruze Diesel, which will reportedly get 50 mpg. Unlike the Volt, the Cruze has above-average styling and is selling well. Perhaps in the future, when prices of fossil fuels have risen astronomically, the domestic biodiesel industry will be big enough to produce a significant portion of our nation's energy, giving (bio)diesel cars an added edge.

Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Previewed for American Market

GM sales are doing very good. Actually I think all of the 3 big US automakers are seeing very robust sales right now. The Volt unfortunately just hasn't taken off and the big issue is the price. I would think though that as gas prices continue to go up that more consumers will move towards hybirds, electrics, and more fuel efficient vehicles overall.

I looked up Leaf sales and they just went over 10k units in the US in about a year of sales. Worldwide they have sold even more and it comes in at about 20k worldwide. So I think the situation is very similar and Nissan has been pushing the Leaf much more effectively with commercials than has GM with the Volt. But either way sales numbers are sluggish right now b/c this is such a recent addition to the vehicle fleet that many consumers are still leary or not having anywhere to charge up, the sticker price, and being scared that the technology might not be fleshed out just yet. Just like we saw when flatscreen TVs came out the prices were ridiculous and the quality was horrible compared to what we have even just 5 years later. I have a 46 inch LCD flatscreen upstairs that cost me 4k in 2006 and the contract and brightness of the screen is what you would expect for a TV made in 2006. In 2010 I bought a 46 inch LED LCD for about 2k and it is far superior. So my experience is telling me to wait a few years on even thinking about buying an EV-hybrid of all EV vehicle. I am going to wait for the sticker price to go up and for the quality to go up as well. So right now you have these incentives and rebates to help bring down the sticker price for the early adopters but you shouldn't be expecting the sales to be robust right now. Wait 3 years, come back and reports sales #s, and then we can have a real discussion.

Didn't Barry say he planned on buying a Volt as soon as was done being President? That was a just a few days ago.

Sly as a fox, our President is. Like he didn't know this was coming.

How does one discern the difference between domestic anti government types and foreign anti government types if the hatred looks, feels and sounds the same?

The one percent have collected all the government chese they care to collect on this program. Let's see what other ways we can dole out money we don't have.

Shiner are you for just getting rid of all car subsidies?

I am only peed off that we subsidize foreign produced vehicles or subsidize them them at near similar levels to American produced vehicles.

Guys....this is the car America had to build. The commercial said so.

This is vintage Obama and its totally lost on the bots out there.
