Gosselin's Mock Draft

Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News is considered one of the best at predicting teh first round. His first mock draft was in the DMN on Friday. He plans to revise the listing twice before draft day, and this list was weighted more heavily on "best player available."
That said, no Horns in his first round.

That mock is pretty bad. No way in hell is Jacksonville taking Brian Brohm in the first round. They just gave Garrard a 60 million dollar extension. His reason for the pick is that the Jaguars need qb depth to compete in their division. That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard someone say about the draft.

The DMN is one of the best sports sections in the entire country. The sports editors' association perennially perennially recognizes it as such. Similarly, Gosselin is considered one of the very best NFL beat writers in the country. It doesn't mean they are infallible, but both are excellent.

Don't put much stock in this mock draft or next Sunday's either. Gosselin has said he reaches with his first couple of drafts and you should only pay attention to the one he publishes on April 26th.

They are not one of the best, they are one of the better ones. I give them that. It is all subjective to opinion and it is nice that Texans consider it that but I consider top 3 or 4 to be among the best and the list from there goes to "better ones". DMN is a better one.

Gosselin is a great writer though. But the important fact here is that he states it is a best player available. He does not know what team graded what player the best v. who would be remaining. Also, since he does that he ignores glaring needs for teams.

Of course he will revise his list a couple times. There will be trades and he will realize his list is not very good. But it is an interesting list to look at to see top talent.

Having lived in Chicago, Phoenix, New Orleans, Houston, Austin and Dallas...DMN is the worst sports page. If you are a Dallas Cowboys fan or anything but a Longhorn, it rules. If you don't give a rats *** about Pro football and are a Longhorn, you find other means to get your news.

The Cowboys almost always do not take Texas players in the draft. If they continue their history, they will basically ignore Sweed.

Jerry Jones hates the Longhorns. Just ask Leonard Davis. Oh, wait. He's one of the highest paid right guards in the league.

Gosselin's draft story today was about DL. Okam wasn't mentioned as in the top 15 nor even listed among players from the state of Texas. I admit I haven't been following his progress since the end of the season, but why wouldn't he be listed?

Hook'em!!!

he is soft and lacks the nasty attitude they look for in the pros. Also his pursuit of the ball is below average. I still hope he gets a shot and proves me wrong, because he seems like a great guy and even better student.

There is talk amongst NFL types that Okam would be better served on the other side of the ball. His mindset is more suited to O-line than D-line.

Gosselin is one of the shrewdest beat writers around the League. You may disagree with him, but his opinions are almost always well-informed and well-reasoned.

They are a poor sports section but cover "America's Team". The information they provide is limited, cliche, and weak. Then again, most newspapers are.

Goose built his rep on one draft over 5 years ago when he hit the first 10 or 11 and something like 17 of the first 18. He hasn't come close to that since. His mocks are usually better than anyone elses because he actually calls GMs to ask them who they are going to draft.

Isn't that what a reporter does? Call people and talk to them? Or would you rather have him pull stuff out of his butt? That statement makes no sense at all.

There is no more "Looks like Tarzan, Plays Like Jane" Buchsbaum--no one is so good at analyzing film that GMs call him.

Version 2 is out -- see today's DMN.

This projection is weighed more heavily on team needs. Charles and Sweed are in Round 1.

Waiting on the "final" next week. By the way -- as to the comments immediately above, Gosselin does get most of his info (particularly for the last version) from team sources. That's a good way to do it instea dof guessing. Because of his reputation in NFL circles, he has pretty good access to teams. NO, he doesn't always get it right, but his are better than just about anyone else's.
