Google Maps Houston to Austin Route

It's now suggesting I-10 to Luling, TX-80 to San Marcos, and I-35 to Austin is faster than I-10 to TX 71 or 290.

Interesting....never tried that route and can't fathom it being quicker.

It's a dumb machine. It will get you where you want to go, but it has no idea what the fastest way is. You only rely on it if you don't know better. You know better-either I10 to 71 or 290W is a better and faster route, and which one to take depends on what part of Austin you want to end up in.

For some reason, all those computer mapping systems seems to hate Highway 71. They all must assign it a low speed limit, when in reality it's easy to do 79 MPH all the way and not even worry about a ticket. With a radar detector, much higher.

This route was faster even before they built the bypass around LaGrange. Most, if not all, of my 10-71 trips while at UT ('87-'91) took me right through downtown LaGrange.

Do they have a lot of pretty girls?

The stretch of 71 from La Grange through Ellinger towards Columbus is often heavily speed trapped by DPS. At least they are there when I go through that area. I would not suggest too much speeding on that stretch until you hit the 10 (did that for Will) into Houston.

That stretch has been a DPS honey hole for over 20 years. I've driven that route to almost every home game played since 1992. On at least 80% of those trips I've either seen DPS either on the prowl or with someone already pulled over.

When I started driving it regularly in 1987, the speed limit was 55 MPH. Brutal. Now 70 MPH feels like crawling.

The whole section from I-10 to LaGrange should be handled as follows:
1. 79 MPH max;
2. Radar detector; or
3. Follow at least 100 yards behind a fellow lead foot.

In very light traffic conditions radar detection may not be enough. They will nail you with instant-on radar.

It would not be out of the question for Google to sell their recommended routes to advertisers to drive business by their locations.

I usually go I-10 to Luling and then take 183 through Lockhart on my way to or from Austin only when I'm hungry. It definitely adds 15-30 minutes to your trip plus whatever time you spend in The City Market, Kreuz, or Smitty's

Awww, c'mon guys. Google and Mapquest maps are accurate and simple to follow. You just have to have a Master's in Chinese Algebra to understand them. Seriously though, a ton of peeps come into the local coffee shop with a computer map in hand and a bewildered look on their face. Maybe the person who designed the maps is the same one who crashed the Mars satellite because he didn't know the difference between miles and kilometers.

On game days take the shortcut through Smithville, left at the light and an immediate right. Follow that road until it dead ends, and hang a right. It drops you on the other side of Bastrop.
