Good tex-mex in Austin

soo.. the wife & I are heading down to Austin next weekend for the KU game. Other than an overnight in April of '04, I have not been back to Austin since about '02. Where is some good Tex-Mex on the north side of town? I don't want hole in the wall and I don't want On the Border. Is Antonio's still pretty good? Was it ever any good?

Prerequisite is good fajitas and margaritas that don't taste like they came from a mix.

There is so much good Tex Mex here that Pancho's cannot keep an Austin area location in business for long. That's a nice testament.

For real recommendations, check out the thread on the Around Austin board.

I don't know about north austin, but there is a thread in Around Austin towards the top for a restraunt on Anderson. Another thread is S. vs E. austin the link

<your favorite restaurant> sucks ... people only like it because they're supposed to, it's not even real tex-mex. Plus, it's <east / west> of I35, which means it can't be any good. For REAL mexican food, go to <my favorite restaurant>. But whatever you do, <never/always> drop by Matt's El Rancho - it's <the bomb/worst food on the planet>.

Hornfans, covered.

Wow! Cap'n that was awesome. No one needs to ever post about Tex-Mex on this site ever again. That post covers all that has ever been said/will be said on the topic.

Chuy's off 183 @ Duval? Not a hole-in-the-wall, and not On The Border. The north side is a little lacking.

well done capnamerca

if you have to stay north, chuy's north location may be your best bet. its worth the extra mileage to head into central austin for el azteca, las manitas, fonda san miguel, etc.

better yet, take monday off and drive on down to san antone. we could show austin a thing or two about mexican food.

capn that was awesome!

I'd personally recommend La Palapa on Cameron & 290 east up by Reagan High. Good food, cheap prices, not a chain, not a hole in the wall...I really like it.

I would have said Maudie's also, but there really isn't one up north. I think there's one on N. Lamar (above 183) but I've never been.

Manuel's is a good choice; don't know about their fajitas, though. But I do like their margaritas.

I need to get to Jardin Corona.

There's a Maudies on 360 at Davenport Village - not that far north, but only 10 minutes from the Arboretum, which to me is about as far north as anyone ever need go.

Maudie's on North Lamar is, well, up north in my book.
El Azteca is good. For breakfast, Las Manaitas, Angelas or Sol y Luna-that might be good for dinner as well, on S. Congress. There's several on S. 1st Street, pick one.
