Good Starter Bass?

I was wanting to learn to play bass guitar and was wondering what a good starter would be? I don't want it to be a jazz bass. Would I need 4 string or 5 or does it matter? Also I am on a kinda tight budget so I need a cheapie but goodie.

I would say smallmouth to start out with. Move up to the large mouth once you get the hang of it.

The Ibanez basses are solid for beginners. I think when I got mine about 8 years ago they ran around $200.

Peavey's aren't bad beginner versons. Do yourself a favor and get a 4 string.
