...besides Costco.
I want to buy some art (modern is my fave) for my apartment, but don't want to spend more than like $30-$40.
Anybody have some suggestions?

Hit up Jester around the start of a semester. They have all those posters and art for cheap for students moving in. They have a good range and if you look behind the trendy or run of the mill ones you can find some good stuff. Also, they have catalogs w/ stuff you can order w/ cheap delivery. That is if you can get to campus or can wait the month or two till Semester rolls around.

For $30-$40 your only choice is probably the starving artists crap they sell at conference rooms of cheap hotels. For a decent size painting, the canvas and paints cost more than that alone. Maybe find someone in your art class whose work you like and try to make them an offer.

I don't really want posters of paintings, more interested in actual paintings. I realize that at this price, nothing will be stunning, but it's gotta be better than my poster of Wish You Were Here that i've had since 10th grade. And it's gotta be better than the crap i did in my 6-week art class.
that, and i graduated and no longer live in austin, so the jester idea is out - though appreciated.

It's a shame your not still in Austin. I was going to suggest going down to Hickory St. There is a guy who does drawings of Austin landmarks who sells his **** there every once in a while. He used to sell his stuff in front of the People's Pharmacy on North Lamar across from Central Market. He's crazy and pseudo homeless but its original artwork and its cheap.

Like I said its a damn shame you aren't still in Austin.

Try art.com under the original works section: The Link

This unframed original pastel is $35.00:

try thrift stores-- I found a couple pieces of art there for cheap -- like 7 bucks or so-- usually the ones that sell more funiture have them. Antique stores sometimes have art too. I've gotten lucky-- LHF68 and I don't have any un-original art in our house, but we've never paid more that 75 dollars for a piece. All of them have been lucky finds-- we've bought art everything from bums on the street to south congress to coffee shops. It's there, you just have to be patient and know where to look.

Where are you located?

Definitely, check the Salvation Army thrift stores, they have a lot of furniture and are likely to have art as well. Goodwill might, but not as likely.

I know you said you wanted original and not prints, but just in case, you can always get cheap prints at Garden Ridge Pottery. They have a huge selection.

Or, buy some blank artist's canvases at Michael's or Hobby Lobby or Garden Ridge, and make your own. My wife is no major artist, but she's done some pretty cool stuff on her own.

Go to some restaurants that feature artwork by local artists of where you live. I know in Austin places like Star Seeds and Hyde Park Grill have some hanging on the wall. Some of it can be a couple hundred dollars and some much less, just depends.

Let us know what you find and where. Thanks.
