This is a topic that's dearer than my day job to my music playing self.

Maybe someone who hasn't seen some these flicks and needs to will check 'em out.

"The Commitments" is one of the best movies about being in a band.

See if you recognize a younger Maria Doyle Kennedy, who more recently played Catherine of Aragon in "The Tudors," as the dark-haired backup singer in "The Commitments."

I forget which song she sings lead on.

And Glen Hansard, star of "Once," plays the band's guitarist.

Also check out "Cadillac Records," "Prey for Rock and Roll," "Satisfaction," "One Trick Pony" and "Light of Day" for good movies about playing in a band.

Some big stars playing musicians in these flicks, so check out the cast credits.

Good music, decent to excellent acting, interesting stories.

Here's another good one, this time a documentary:

Your thoughts?

I'll say it too.

I think Fountains of Wayne played the music in that flick for the Oneders/Wonders.

It was enjoyable.

wow, i haven't seen "one trick pony" in 25 years.

my b-day is comin up, so i think i'll ask my bride to get that DVD for me.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains" - with a very young Diane Lane and Laura Dern

"This is Spinal Tap" - enough said

"Bandwagon" - flawed movie, but pretty neat little flick about being an indie rock band on the road.

Documentary alert:

"Dig"- can't recommend "Dig" enough. Even if you don't like the music, this documentary is fascinating about two bands no one ever heard of "trying to make it". One sort of does: the dandy warhols, the other implodes, literally: brian jonestown massacre. This movie tells you more about what it's like bring in a band than any other movie i have ever seen.

"The Decline of the Western Civilization 1" - early 80's LA punk scene. Darby Crash stars

"The Decline of the Western Civilzation 2" - mid 80's LA glam metal scene. Chris Holmes and a bottle of Vodka star.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains is pretty cool, if a little bit too closely wed to Times Square.

Lane and Dern are joined by a young Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast, The Proposition, The Departed) who fronts a punk band made up of Steve Jones (Pistols - g), Paul Simonon (Clash - b), and Topper Headon (Clash - d). The two originals they play were actually pretty good...right about what you'd expect from that lot. Fee Waybill, the lead singer from the schlock rock band The Tubes, gives a hilarious turn as an aging rocker, and LA *** punk Black Randy and his Metro Squad provide some over-the-top down and dirty street cred to the whole shebang.

Lou Adler, often seen sitting on Jack Nicholson's right during Laker marches to the crown, directed as a break from producing pop crap.

I really liked 24 Hour Party People.

Blues Brothers is passable.

What We Do Is Secret, which is about the Germs, is awful.

The Declines are great.

Blah blah blah.

Completely agree with FAST FRED about The Commitments. Probably one of my all-time favorites up there with This Is Spinal Tap. The "Elvis was a cajun" song during the audition sequence always cracks me up. Although The Commitments is set in Dublin, I guess I can relate to it quite a bit from playing in some (mostly) cover bands when I lived in the U.K. Very funny and under-appreciated movie.

Surprised nobody has mentioned "Anvil: The Story of Anvil" yet. Maybe we're trying to keep it fictional. Otherwise, top-notch documentary with a great story and very well made.

If you guys liked "24 Hour Party People" and are fans of Joy Division/New Order, check out the movie I listed above.

Control was awesome.
