Good Mexican Food Outside of RiverWalk

big thumbs up for Karam's. family-owned, something like 40-60 years, i forget. any cabbie will take u there. it's worth it.

most places on the south end of downtown, around where the bail bonds also have good hole-in-the-walls.

I "third" Karam's.

But as stated, it's a little too far for a walk, but a short cab ride.

If walking is the only option, then Mi Tierra's is the call. Some around here bemoan it as a "tourist trap", and yes, it is ridiculously crowded, but the last several times I've been there, I've come away very pleased.

It is well- documented that SA_Town_Horn eats Chicken Fried Steak at Mexican restaurants.

Walking distance from downtown:
Rosarios (in Southtown) very good
El Mirador (in Southtown) very good
Tito's (in Southtown) taco joint, good
Mi Tierra (In El Mercado) Great bar and pastries. Food is fair.
La Margarita (next to Mi Tierra in El Mercado). I think it's better food than Mi Tierra
Casa Rio (on the river, average)
Aldaco's (next to Alamodome in sunset station) okay.

Other places like Karam's and La Fogata are good, but you can't walk there from downtown.

if the reason for the off the riverwalk qualification is to avoid a crowd, then aldacos and mi tierra wont help. el mirasol or los barrios would be my picks for off the riverwalk, but my suggestion would be to put ur name on the list at acenar, and tough out the wait. its worth it. best mexican food downtown, possibly even in town period. great bar next door in the valencia called v bar. kill some time over there with a cold martini.

Try the Mexican Manhattan on Soledad - they recently opened a rear patio fronting on the river:
The Link

It's been a locals' place since it opened 50 years ago - My family's been going there since the beginning.

Have only had one mediocre/bad meal there out of dozens.

Im going to SA this weekend and staying by the riverwalk. I know most of the recommendations on this thread are for off the riverwalk. Are there any good recommendations for restraunts directly on the riverwalk? Are they tourist traps? How do they stack up with the other restraunts that were metioned to be off-riverwalk?
