Good Italian Food Restaurants in Austin?

Some friends are heading to Austin this weekend and asked about good Italian food restaurants in Austin that are not chain restaurants.

Any suggestions?

I've finally decided that the most glaring omission from Austin's restaurant scene is a good, traditional, neighborhood, Sicilian-style Italian place. One of the darkest days in Austin restaurant history was when Little Italy at Spicewood Springs and Mesa went out of business. The only place I've been to that comes close to filling that void is Reale's way out north on 183 (at Anderson Mill Rd.). If anyone remembers Little Italy and is aware of a restaurant in Austin that even comes close to matching that place, please post it here.

You could go by and try that new place on 2nd Street, Taverna.

Max, the Treehouse Grille off South Congress comes pretty close to what you're looking for. It's probably my favorite Italian restaurant in Austin, simply because I like very traditional, simple Italian food. For more upscale dining that reminds me of Italian restaurants in NYC or Boston, I'd recommend Bellagio.

Vespaio & Siena are good, but they certainly aren't traditional. Carmelo's is also good. So is La Traviata.

None set my hair on fire.

I love Sienna's. They have really good lunch specials. Very nice decor also. I also remember liking Piccolo's in WEst Campus during school.

vespaio and siena are my favorites, but when I think Italian, I think Tuscan cuisine - I live close to the Treehouse, but have never gone, I might have to give that a try.

Mama Mia's was great.

tropheus, if you go to Treehouse Grill expecting to order something besides the traditional pasta/sauce combinations or entrees like chicken marsala, lasagne, or veal parmesan, you'll be disappointed. It's not adventurous. It's just good.

Tony's Vineyard is great... I hate that their location is so terrible (it's right on west campus, but hard to notice) because they deserve to do much better business.

Anything you try on their menu will be great. They also have a ravioli special each night... i've tried a couple of them (one was brocolli and italian sausage, i think) and they're great, too.

I also like Vinny's on Barton Springs in the old Holiday House.

Be aware this isn't "good" italian food, though. It's a delightful combination of garlic and olive oil delivered on pasta and toppings. Stay away from the marinara and get something with the red pepper cream sauce.
