IMHO, Northwest Houston is the mecca for Public Courses. Blackhorse is really nice. Gleannloch since the Augusta Pines folks poured money into it is playing great again. The real gems are a little farther out. High Meadow Ranch north of Tomball is an outrageous track. It is a classic, picturesque layout. Relatively cheap for the quality of the golf experience. 3 distinctly different 6 hole "loops". From the Golds, its only 6800 yds, but it plays longer than it seems. Par 5's are not scorable, 4's are rare. The Par 4's are the scoring holes. Par 3's ....there are no gimmes with all being long iron holes. Great service, too. Another gem is Elkington's track Fish Creek. He sold it to some developers and they changed the name (forgot the name), but the greens are awesome and no houses either.
Last time we played Sienna it was in terrible shape, but that was last summer. Any more recent reports?
One of my all-time favorites is the former Bentwood - called something else now that slips my mind. Probably the best greens (public) in town because they fully intended for it to be a posh Kingwood community (found out after building course that it was zoned to Porter schools). Huge greens that allow the course to rotate the holes and prevent damage / wear.
Anyone played Magnolia Creek lately? Fun links course down south.
Sienna was in decent shape, given that the course was very wet from the recent rains. Very long course from the back tees with wind and wet conditions, but overall a pretty good course for the price.
