Seems like the Four Seasons, the Driskill or the Stephen F. Austin would be good choices. If you want something more eclectic and less expensive but close to downtown, try the Austin Motel or Hotel San Jose. If you like B&Bs, the Miller-Crockett House B&B downtown and the Governors' Inn near UT are both supposed to be nice.
I really like the Hotel San Jose. On South Congress, eclectic and in a cool neighborhood. Of course, if you're looking to spend some bucks, it's hard to go wrong with the Four Seasons.
My wife and I went to priceline and got the Omni Dowtown at $70 a night. Not bad at all. We enjoyed it immensely. Pool and hot tub on the roof are nice. Minibar in the room was pretty sweet too.
For a feel of what old-time Austin was like, stay at the Driskill. They have renovated it, but also restored a lot of it's look when it was THE place to stay back in the 50's & 60's. Can be expensive, however, so maybe it should be used for a special occasion.
I was at the Driskill for the first time this past weekend in a pimp-a$$ suite...it was absolutely amazing...thank god for rich friends and girls who break up for them...
I stayed at SFA on UNT weekend and had a pretty bad customer service experience. The ******** tried to tell me I only had the room reserved for one night, instead of two. They would not do anything for me, after I insisted it was their error. Of course this was the one time I didn't bring my confirm. letter. So I logged into my email, printed out my confirmation email, gave it to them, and then I was accused of doctoring the email to say 2 nights! I couldn't believe it. I asked to speak to a manager but she was "unavailable".
I wrote a letter to SFA and received 2 free nights in a suite and a discount off of my room. I am going to give it another try, because as said before the facilities and location are great.
After staying there over the holidays, I have to mention the Hotel San Jose. Excellent space, nicely re-modeled rooms, great grounds...
The staff is a little uppidy, but it's LA meets Mexico and they are creating a scene. I would love to see it during SXSW.
