Does anybody have any recommendations for a good gym or health club. Preferably campus area, dowtown, or south austin. I have a membership at World's on 1st street but it kinda sucks. Looking for a place with alot of good machines, adequate cardio etc..

HD, Power House Gym at 5th and Lamar is your best bet for what your looking to find. Lots of equipment and VERY close to the hike and bike trail. $55 a month w/ $150 initiation fee
The Town Lake YMCA is across the street on Lamar. Same price as Power House.
Hyde Park Gym is at 42nd and Quadalupe. Very close to campus. Looks like a hardcore gym but has a diverse group . Not a lot of cardio equipment. A neighborhood gym. $40 a month, $89 for three months; no initiation fee.
The City View Athletic Club is just south of Barton Springs. Not exactly near campus but no long drive either. $20-30 a month; initiation varies.
You can also try UT Rec Sports. ON CAMPUS! You get access to Gregory Gym, the Rec Center, Bellmont Hall, Anna Hiss gym, Whitaker Fields, and limited use of the Jamail Swim Center. Racquetball!!!!! $49-$450 a year. NO initiation fee. Parking sucks.
I am a personal trainer, so feel free to e-mail me any
questions you have. Good luck and train hard man! ~..~

I go to Fitness Connection on Ben White between Manchaca and S. 1st. It was $100 initiation, $21.60 a month. Lots of parking, huge space (used to be a grocery store), lots of classes if you're into that.

Que?

Thanks guys. I've heard the World's gym downtown (around 6th I think) is pretty nice. I might have to check that out as well. I play baseball for St. Edward's, but their facilities leave something to be desired. I might give the Powerhouse gym a try since it will be a little closer to where I live 29th & Guad. I heard hyde park was mostly free weights...

What pissed me off about the World's I go to now is that I had a membership 3 years ago when it was Future Firm and that was where all the strippers from Expose and Showpalace would work out. Now it appears they have all left for that Fitness Connection three I's speaks of.

KK, I don't think so. Gregory Gym and the Rec Center are your best choices. You've already paid for it when you enrolled.

I'm a student, but I workout at the world's at Lincoln Village. I like Gregory, but it's too crowded.

Wolf, the YMCA costs as much as Powerhouse? I can't believe that.

cj, I got the info out of Austin Fit Magazine. I think that's ******** if it's true. The Y doesn't have to pay taxes like other health clubs. It should be cheaper than Powerhouse.

How about Mecca. Kind of pricey but is it good. I want a gym that has towels, is clean, and has a good variety of fitness equipment and is close to downtown.

I HIGHLY recommend the Worlds by Highland Mall. The girls from Sugar's work out there. and you can see the stuff for free.

What about 24 Hour Fitness, the place that used to be the Q on Researach between Great Hills and Braker? The Q was cool when it was new, but I don't know anyone who goes to 24 hour. Any opinions?

Durkee, 24 hour fitness has turned the Q into another World's. The pool is one of the only reasons people join. The place is breaking apart. Something is ALWAYS broken or "in repair". The front desk is like a European border check point. A smile is something the employees do when they clock out. If you have a billing or service problem, you'll get an address in Carlsbad,Ca. If you're thinking about joining, see if the sales person will let you talk to any of the members. Get the opinion of those who have signed a contract. A group of memebers had to get a petition to get equipment fixed. A tour of the locker room should clue you to their commitment to a clean club.
The only good thing about the place is that they, and Fitness Connection, sell the Apex brand of supplements.

Thanks, Texas Wolf! I appreciate the input. I used to be at World's and hated it, so I will definitely ask to talk to members before I even think about joining, if I even go out there at all!

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will probably just switch my World's membership over to the "universal" one so I can go to other locations as well (save 6th street it appears).

Word on the street says World's is going to take over the building that Academy vacated on Research. I think they will put a pool at this location.

Ful Court Fitness is opening Feb18th. It will have a NBA regulation court, climbing wall, spining theater, tanning beds, hot tub, etc. Each piece of cardio equipment will have a TV monitor. It will also have a small sports bar in the culb. It's going to be very high-tech. 620 & el Salido. About a mile west of Lakeline Mall towards the lake.

Does anybody know anything about Iron Smith on 35th? It looks expensive and kind of cheesy but it is pretty much right across the street from my house.

Iron Smith is a bad *** personal training gym. I think you can join w/o a trainer. No gym ******** at all. You just work out then get out. Plain and simple. They have very good trainers.

for some reason, I find it odd to have a tanning bed in a gym. It is a pretty well accepted fact that they are not healthy, yet, people put them in health clubs. My gym is great: no AC, very little social activity, no fancy equipment, no chicks in makeup, no dudes in spandex with shaved chests, just people busting their asses getting in great shape. I'd post the name, but all of you ******** might show up and make it crowded.

h.i., I think you can purchase a membership there ,IS, or just buy sessions with a trainer. If you're looking for a gym, you should try World's, Powerhouse, etc. If you want to get serious about losing you're weight or competing (running, cycling, swimming, etc.), this is the place. Like I said they have very good trainers.

My gym, Fitness Connection on Ben White, will be having Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader tryouts on Saturday. I think I might be having a long workout on Saturday.

Fitness Connection on Ben White between Manchaca and S. 1st - There is an unadvertised student special there. Pretty good deal.

ifyou got in early with the Q (24 hr) you are golden. now its a sham. My parents are members and I used to be before comign to UT.
