I'm in Houston, and am not that familiar with the North Austin area. Goin out on Friday night, and need some suggestions for a good restaurant for a first date. Not too extravagant, but with good atmosphere conducive to talking, etc. Thanks!

Z Tejas is perfect. If you want a little nicer, Eddy V's is next door. Also, believe it or not, the steaks at cool river are very good. Also, Musachino is good for sushi and its pretty north (ish).

there are a few places in the arboretum, all great restaurants. after that, you can go for ice cream at amy's then walk around the park.

take her somewhere with oysters....itll get her horny

if you're not into that, go somewhere near the arboretum as listed above

on second thought...goto Ararat's. really good food, nice intimate place, dim lights, not expensive, BELLY DANCERS

didnt know they had belly dancers at the union on thursdays....for someone studying for the mcat, you sure seem like you have plenty of time to waste

they've been there since my first year, maybe even longer. and i only studied for the mcat from january - april, i do things at all other times. for example, i travel, watch tennis tournaments, and meet maria sharapova.

Ararat is in North Hyde Park (Central Austin). Although, there are a bunch of places where Mopac turns into round rock. I think there is a Benihana style steakhouse and one or two other places nice enough to take a first date.

i think imight have heard that benihana's closed?
yeah i know ararats is in central austin, its awesome nonetheless....if you decide to go there itll be a different yet fun experience.

Z Tejas is good. Also, isn't there a North by Northwest around there? I ate there once, thought it was pretty good and certainly reasonable.

I don't know much, I'm basing this on visiting a friend who lives in the Arboretum (sp?) area.

N X NW is vile. Dont eat there unless you never want a second date. All of this talk about Ararat made me think of Alborz. Alborz is a Persian place on the corner of Anderson and Shoal Creek in the same shopping center as Satay (dont eat there either), and some mattress store. For lunch, he has a buffet that is good, but their dinner menu is great and his food is very authentic and much better than Ararat. Having eaten middle-eastern food my whole life, I really like Alborz more than any other place in austin. Its also nice enough for a first date.

I personally would go to Carrabbas, it's italian food, if you don't know

It's very good, good in price and just a romantic place, imo. If you want some seafood, ask for the Scampi Damian(it's not on the menu anymore but it is to die for) and the tiramisu is very good too.

crayon,

I only went to NxNW one time when I was in town. A friend lives near there and his girlfriend likes the place quite a bit. She's actually got pretty good taste about that stuff.

I thought the place seemed like a real "hit or miss" kind of spot. It wasn't very crowded for a Sat. night and the service was average. However, my food was good.

anyway, what was so terrible about the place for you?

I wouldn't do Carraba's either, unless I was <22 years old

wow, Alborz is one of my favorite restaurants - I eat there regularly. now that i think about it, the first time i went there was actually on a first date, and i was really impressed that the guy knew of something different than the boring usual places (I love Z Tejas, but it gets old after awhile). my persian friends have all thought it was very authentic, and my non-persian friends all thought it was delicious as well. interesting.

alborz really isnt as bad as i make it sound...i just prefer others. more than likely i just like the atmosphere of ararats over that of alborz, but food-wise...it doesnt really matter. plus i hated the waiter i had at alborz(usually a make or break for a restaurant in my view)
