Good eats around Hyde Park area

So I'm moving to Hyde Park in a week from West Campus. What are the best places around there to eat?

I noticed theres some little sandwich store that's like inside a house on Avenue B. Is this place any good? Other than that I haven't had that much time to see what's around there. I know Mandola's is pretty close in the Triangle thing but that's a little rich for my college budget.

First off, congrats on moving to North Campus, I've lived in the North Campus vicinity for all 4 years (2 years around Red River and 32nd at two different apartments River Oaks and La Casita, 1 year at 51st and Lamar at Pecan Grove, and this year at 39th and Speedway at Su Casa). I love North campus, and here are a few places I love starting from Campus up

Posse East Speedway/Duval split, sports bar
Double Daves Speedway/34th
Mangia Pizza Guadalupe/~34th
Wheatsville Co-op Guadalupe/~34th
Hyde Park Bar and Grill Speedway/~45th
Mothers Right across from Hyde Park Bar and Grill
Quacks Bakery in the same mall as HPB and G

Yeah, that little sandwich shop on Ave. B is pretty cool. There used to be a place called New World Deli at about 41St. and Guadulaupe (not sure if it's still there) ... and of course there's Freebird's and Pei Wei at Hancock Center.

There's Hyde Park Grill and an Italian place that I can't remember the name of on Duval. I think there was another place across the street that closed.

And, of course, the deli at Central Market is pretty close to Hyde Park.

Or come up to North Loop and go to the Parlor and have a pizza and drink a beer and listen to a band.

Then of course there's the Tamale House on Airport for breakfast tacos and lunch and Mrs. Johnson's for doughnuts.

Withing walking distance:
Hyde Park Bar and Grill (American)
New World Deli (try their breakfast tacos too, and they just started a dinner menu)
Mothers (Vegan/Veggie; currently closed after a homeless carnivore burned the place down)
Julios (Tex/Mex)
Asti (Italian?)
Dolce Vita (espresso/gelato)
Quacks (coffee/pastry)
The pizza place next to the movie store (decent, I prefer mandolas)
I haven't been to Ave B grocery since I was a kid, but they use to have good sandwiches.

Within a short drive:
Mandolas
All the stuff on burnet (EZs, hilberts, taco shack, etc)
Hancock center (90% crap + Freebirds)
Dan's (up Lamar)
Central Market
Guadalupe area (Changos, Mangias, Amy's, T-Cloud, etc)

Asti is the Italian place but know that it's not chicken parm/spaghetti/lasagna Italian. The Link

Ave B Grocery is my favorite sandwich shop in Austin. Beware the sandwich nazi, however. Whatever you do, don't open your bag of chips until you get outside. Don't even think about taking a sip of your coke until outside. You better tip the sandwhich girl. If you dare talk on your cell phone when they try and take your order you might as well forget lunch.

Ha. Just read all the little signs he has put up and you'll get the drift. Been going there for 12 years and it's still interesting every time. Great sandwiches.

El Caribe (on Lamar near Dan's). This place is a little gem. College budget friendly as well.

Ive eaten at Ave. B before. I thought that it wasn't anything special. Just a regular *** sandwich. It wasn't bad by any means, but nothing that would make me go out of my way to eat there.

Hyde Park is hood. It's worse than Waco. Seriously, there's roving gangs of 12yo cell phone thieves. They'll skin a man alive with his own phone. I've seen it with my own eyes.

I know Hyde Park is the hood... the original neighborhood in Austin.

Interesting follow up to the Waco story... my friend who lived there is transferring to St. Eds because he couldn't take Waco anymore.

So now I have absolutely no reason to go there ever again.

That area around Dolce Vita/Hyde Park bar & Grill/Asti/Quack's is an awesome place to take a date. There's an old school barber shop right there as well.
