sorry to burst your bubble, but there's no REALLY good chinese restaurant in Austin, let alone NW austin. by chinese i mean american chinese, i don't know about the other stuff because i don't enjoy cow knuckles and jellyfish tentacles. if you want the best american-chinese you've ever had go to Hunan in houston. it's off post oak. get The Return of the Phoenix. it's so ******* good, it's trademarked
Nan King's is at 183/Anderson Mill, next to Walgreen's. $4 lunch specials are an awesome deal, but don't get anything with beef in it. The garlic chicken is really good though.
Gotta agree with Fat Bastard. Good Chinese restaurants in Austin are almost non-existent...
Maybe I'm more critical when it comes to Chinese food (I am 3/4 Chinese after all), but I can't swallow the crud they serve at PF Changs or Suzi's. Those two restaurants are the epitome of Americanized Chinese food with their sweet and sour sauces and insipid dishes. Yech!
If you're willing to drive an extra few miles, look for Paos somewhere off of Bee Caves. They used to be located downtown around 12th street, but moved for reasons unknown. The other place my room-mate and I go to are Mandarin House and T&S on North Lamar. They're more of the Cantonese style - lotsa gravies, decent food, HORRIBLE HORRIBLE decor. Secret to Chinese food is to go with lots of people and eat family style, the way Chinese food is supposed to be eaten.
It's all relative man. Sure, you may not like the choices in Austin, but some are better than others. When I go see family up north and they talk about good Mexican restraunts, I don't rail them on how much their mexican food sucks. You have to make the best of a bad situation.
If Twin Dragon is still in business, I would try that. It is both chinese and vietnamese. On the vietnamese menu, they had a most amazing appetizer of shrimp and water chestnut in rice paper, fried, and you wrap it in lettuce and put pllum sauce on it. Really, really good. I have not been there in 5 years, but it had been around a long time when I moved away.
Joe's Shanghai in Chinatown NYC does have the best dumplings hands down. But, I have had better food elsewhere in NYC. I still dont know how they get those juices in those dumplings. But in Austin, Twin Dragon is my favorite. Dont know if its still there. It use to be off of Lamar and 183. I am not too sure. Its been forever. Too Long. Try the black pepper soft shelled crabs, they rule!
Din Ho Chinese BBQ off 183 and Peyton Gin by the Target. It's cheap and the food is great. My girlfriend's best friend is Chinese and it is the only place in Austin she will eat. I highly recommend the garlic chicken or orange chicken. PF Chang's is very americanized chinese, I didn't like it at all and it isn't cheap. I always liked Pao's downtown, it's pretty good.
China Star at 290/IH35, China Garden off of Riverside& Pleasant Valley. Imperial Palace on Anderson lane are three of my favorites. There are more. I'm very happy with Chinese food in Austn.
Paos was a good one but had to close its downtown location. I was told that the building didn't want any restaurants in the building.
T & S on North Lamar is good and a lot of Asians go to Mandarin House. Din Ho is another place to try for "real" Chinese/Asian food. Suzi's and PF Chang's aren't bad but its more looks than taste, plus Chinese food isn't suppose to be that expensive.
I personally like Fire Bowl Cafe on Brodie Ln. (across from Home Depot) because it has EXCELLENT soups and a pretty good stir fry selection.
Thai Kitchen on I35 and William Cannon is pretty good.
A restaraunt called Taiwan on William Cannon across from Bedichek Jr. high has good food as well, they have very good Hot and sour soup.
I heard Kim Phoung (sp) was rated one of the top Asian restaurant with cheap prices, large servings, and very good food.
China Star has a great selection on the buffet line and they serve all you can eat crab legs as well.
