Good, cheap shotgun

Mossberg 500 vs. Remington 870.

Here's why I need it...

1. Home security
2. Skeet shooting

I need the best all-around gun to do both, preferrably short barrel.

I have a winchester that looks like a Remington 1100
I can't remember the model-- not too expensive, but nice shooting

I have a Remington 870 and it has misfired a couple of times. On that note, I'd go Mossberg. Especially the black defender model.

I have an Express 870 and it's been great. It's reliable (mine's never misfired), easy to disassemble and clean, and there are scads of replacement parts so you can modify the snot out of it for whatever purpose you're looking for.

Either way, I wouldn't go leaving a loaded shotgun around the house, especially with kids.

Mac, that will just piss off the grizzlies.
On the other hand, you could really pop some grouse.
We were hiking in the Hoh Rainforest and came across one sitting on a log. I really think it thought it was camouflaged enough to fool us. I could have reached out and whacked it with a stick.
Mmmm..grouuuuse. I hear they taste like chicken.

I've shot an 870 for more than 20 years (wingmaster, a little nicer than an express), and it was 25 years old when I started shooting it. The only problem I ever had was that the firing pin cracked one time when I was hunting and it was about 10 degrees -- it was very old, and the cold made it brittle (could be an issue for you!!!!)

However, it takes a BEATING. I hunt ducks, dove, quail, geese, rabbits, etc. with it, in all kinds of conditions. Never a misfire, never a jam.

And this is important -- it is balanced and swings better than the Mossberg, in my opinion. A shotgun is a personal thing -- if it doesn't fit you right and swing well, it doesn't matter if it is tough as nails. You won't shoot well with it, and you won't like it.

They're both good guns -- go to the store, spend some time shouldering and swinging them, and pick the one that you're most comfortable with. That's the BEST choice.

That's good then - I just assumed that for home defense, most people would load it and throw it under the bed. You know, down there where little kids never look...

Don't be rash, Mac.

Winter will be over by June. Remember, the voices are common for people who live in cold and isolated environments. You can't shoot out the voices.

I will still hunt with a pump mossberg that takes 3 1/2 inch 12 guage shells from time to time. Because it was inexpensive, I have not taken care of it the way that I should and have never had any problems with it. I wish you had said something about it before you left town, I got a SBE a year ago and use that for waterfowl hunting now. I would have made you a deal.

If you want to get a great deal on a shotgun, go to gunsamerica.com.

870 or the Benelli Nova are not bad pump guns. I have a Benelli Nova for my waterfowl gun and like it, although it takes some getting used to shooting a big *** hog leg of a 12 guage after shooting a lightweight O/U all of dove season. I think both models can take a beating. I have put mine in the water, mud, ice, etc. and it still works fine. If you want someone to talk to about it, go to McBrides and talk to Bob...fat guy with glasses...nice knowledgable guy. Good luck...

Why go with just a wimpy shotgun? With a nutbag roaming around, don't you think the safety of your family is worth the best protection you can provide Mac? BTW, have you seen insomnia?
