I think the HEB's in Austin (183/Braker comes to mind) sells them for $1.64 a pound IIRC. Randalls was around $1.80 a pound with a remarkable card. Randalls also had more small briskets where it seems I'm lucky to find a sub 11 lb'er at HEB these days.
I usually offer the butcher a nickel a pound less than they are asking for their cheapest hamburger. They usually take that or something close to it.
Somewhere in the 89-99 cent range is about what I end up paying. That is for a full brisket with all the fat. If they are already trimmed they are quite a bit higher. For what those cost you can get a better cut of meat.
FYI: Randall's in Austin has brisket on sale now for $0.88 / lb. I think the sale will go for a few more days. I'm planning on smoking one for the Holiday Bowl watch party.
Glad to see at least one other poster that is not too proud of himself to shop at Super Walmart. Not only do they regularly carry the best smoking size (9-12lbs.) packer briskets at either $1.38 or $1.48 lb. in my area, but they often have some choice grade mixed with the selects. I have snagged probably 25-30 choice briskets just this year at my local Swm. They won't do case pricing on meat, but they will bring out what they have in the back and let you cherry pick. Yeah their produce sucks compared to HEB and you won't be bumping carts with the $200 jeans crowd, but it is a good place to get briskets and maybe pork shoulders. Oh yeah, cheap Modelo and Shiner most of the time too.
