My wife and just moved to Kyle and are looking for a fun, laid back place to have drinks in the in the area. I'm 40, wife is 32, but we're young at heart. We're not looking for power drinking college crowds, just someplace fun to have a drink without going into Austin.

J's Bistro is nice. It's in the basement of some restaurant.
The Tap Room is fun, but can get noisy when the college kids fill the place. Sean Patrick's is OK, but the beer selection is limited.
I kinda like the Tap Room, the coed talent is off the hook, and the beer selection is outstanding.

You might like San Marcos River Pub. It's a big place with a deck right near the newly re-engineered tubing/kayaking spot on the San Marcos River. They have live music sometimes. It's right down the street from Herbert's, which is Tex-Mex heaven IMHO.

If you go to the River Pub, just avoid the food. Trust me on this.
Last time we went to Happy Hour and made the mistake of getting nachos, one of the gals found pubic hair in the queso.
And the wait staff can be surly. One of our guys got stuck with a $70 bar tab because the waitress ran it twice after everyone else had already paid for their drinks. Just because we drink doesn't mean we're stupid. We haven't been back since. And we have a BIG group of revelers.
We go to Jack's nowdays. Cheap longnecks and coeds. Yay!

Meant to say, if you have a whitewater yak, the play area on the dam is fantastic. They still have the gates up from the Olympic Trials.
Me, I won't ride a kayak unless it has a cupholder for my beer.
