good action for golf games

My nephew-in-law is visiting next month and we are gonna play a bunch of golf.

We're similar handicaps (about 15-18) and want to make things interesting and exciting. I hesitate to play stroke play against each other the whole time because either one of us could score a 10 on a hole a blow the round.

I'm guessing match play, straight up, would be the most fun, but what are some other bets, etc. to make this fun?

Thanks in advance,

Just play a skins game. It is more fun with
more than 2 players. If you tie holes there are carry-overs. Closest to the pin on the green that makes par gets a greenie. Up and down out of the sand is a sandie. A birdie is another skin. We usually do the skins thing then $5 on the front $5 on the back then $5 on the total score. It usually ends up with one of us losing 10-15 bucks or so.

if you have a foursome play wolf it always seems that the best player wins the most but often times the worst player still wins

oops forgot to mention I am an ignoramus.

how do you score greenies and sandies? they just win the skin or what?

What is wolf?

Wolf is a rotating team game that theoretically allows players of divergent skill to play together.

Before the first hole, take one ball from each player and throw them in the air. The order they land, facing down the teebox towards the pin, is the order of play. Write it down on the scorecard in order.

The "wolf" hits first (or last depending on how you like strategy). I say first, because he has the benefit of knowing whether he hit a good shot. After each player hits, the Wolf has the option of picking that player. Once the next player hits, the option to pick the prior player is gone. Thus, you have to pick player two before player three hits.

If the Wolf picks nobody, he is "Lone Wolf," and the hole doubles. He is now playing against the other three players.

If the Wolf declares before he hits he is going alone, he is "Blind Wolf," and the hole triples.

The Wolf and his partner play the other two players, and the best individual score wins (e.g. if the Wolf gets a 4, his partner gets a 12, and the best individual score between the other players is a 5, the Wolf team wins the hole).

After the first hole, the order rotates down, meaning the Wolf is 2nd, and the 4th player is the Wolf.

We play carry overs.

If the Wolf picks you, you can "Hammer" back, meaning you decline the Wolf invitation. The hole doubles and you must beat the 3 remaining players.

We also play "Coyote," which allows the person who is down the most to press back on 15-18. He can only press once, and he is automatically the Wolf on that hole, regardless of the order. He can press as much as he is down.

For some reason all of this means that dollar a hole Wolf invariably ends up being about $125.00 on the final hole.

Everything counts as a skin. If you birdie a hole
you win the hole, a greenie, and the birdie, so you win 3 skins. A couple of weeks ago I went up and down from a greenside bunker on a par 5 that I got to in 2. So I got a sandie, birdie, greenie, and the hole. If both of you are on the green in regulation the ball that is the closest to the pin has
the chance to get a greenie if you make par.

My brother -in-law an d I always play several games on one scorecard.

First and easiest is the $5 Nassau. That's where there is a bet on the front nine, the back nine and the overall. Sometimes we play presses sometimes we don't.

Second we play a game called points we made up a while back. Actually I'm sure someone else in this world made it up but we also came up with it!

This game places a premium on shot placement. If you miss the fairway off the tee you get assessed one point. If you miss a green in regulation you are assessed 2 points. The one with the most points pays up a dollar per point (you can either pay a dollar for the loser's point total or a dollar for each point in the difference between the two).

We also play a dollar for junk. Junk can be birdies, sand saves (par or better, in which case a birdie from the sand would be double) and greenies (closest to the the pin on on a 3 par as long as you are on the green and make par).

If we have a foursome on the course we play a round robin match where you change partners every six holes. This way everyone will eventually have everyone else as a prtner sometime in the round. You figure out how you want to choose but it's easiest partnering up longest drive and shortest drive to start.

Then as most everyone else has said, skins. This is basically a match play game but one where tied holes are carried over until someone wins a hole outright winning all of the previously tied holes as well.

This is a fun game. I call it Amarillo (since I learned the game playing the munis there). Amarillo is a stroke game - double bogey is the max you can get on a hole. Let's say you have 4 sets of tees (Blue, White, Gold, Red {ladies}). Everyone starts on the white tee. If you make birdie on that hole you tee off on the next hole from the blues. If you made par - you stay at the white tees. A bogey moves you up to the gold tees. A double bogey and you have to tee off from the ladies tees. Making double bogey is bad for the score but it evens out cause you're moved up to the red tees. The scores on each hole determine what tee you play from on the next hole. It's a fun game.
