GonePhishing-my conversation with an email scammer

250+ Posts
We're looking for a new place to rent right now and we put a wanted ad on a site like Craigslist.

This is a conversation I have been having with some guy. I knew it was a scam right from the start because the interior photos he was sending over of the place, showed it was HUGE (for London) and certainly would have been renting for about 3 or 4 x the price that he was supposidely advertising it for. He is also throwing in everything including TV etc. That just does not happen here. Anyway...I can't believe he is still continuing this conversation.....I'll start at the beginning...

Dear Ollie,
Definitely you can come and view the flat anytime you want even if you like to view it tomorrow Monday thats no problem for me, but i am presently in Dublin now bcos i move in with my son as he is still schooling here in Dublin, and i need to be sure that you are capable of getting the apartment before i can come to London, imagine a Man ask me to come from Dublin to London that he want to rent the apartment i left to meet him on getting there he told me that he want to rent the apartment but i should allow him to stay till the end of the month b4 he can pay me........... ...can you see that ********,i need to see a sign that you are capable and you have the money before i can come for the viewing but am very sure that you will like the apartment.

At the age of 45yrs and as the same time as a Rev. i cant be stressing myself when am not sure that you are capable. The apartment is available now and you move in at any time.

Thanks,
Rev. James.

Dear Reverent,

I totally understand. How nice for your son to be in Dublin! May the luck of the Irish be upon him and you of course while you are visiting him in that fine country with green pastures as far as the eye can see!

I can see that ********, it would be very very very bad, if a man had to come all the way from Dublin to London only to learn that the rent can't be paid. We of course want you to be sure that rent can be paid. This would make anyone nervous.

Reverend, I also need to ask some other questions about the apartment.

1: Do you like Gerbils? I ask because you never answered my question.

2: How are the neighbours? I ask because we have many animals that we want to keep in the garden. Is this okay to keep some animals in the garden? We have 5 Gerbils, 1 dog, 2 cats, a possum, and also a Meerkat. The Meerkat is especially friendly, but sometimes makes loud squeaking noises when it gets excited. Unfortunately it gets excited when the possum is in heat and ready to breed.

I feel that it it is better to let you know now that we have all these animals. We love animals and some people may not want animals to live in their garden.

3: Could you please send some more photos. If possible we would like to see a photo of the street that the apartment is on. Do you also have some photos of where we can park our car? I hope there is a parking space for our car?

Please let us know how to proceed and please answer the questions especially about the animals.

Thanks again. I hope we can move into your apartment. So far it sounds very exciting!!!

PS: How much money do you require up front?

Ollie

Hummm...... thanks for the prayer and by the special grace of Lord Jesus.....you will be well in all your ways????(AMEN)

More so, I think you sound very matured, plain and interesting to me and i promise to rent out the house for you with all my good heart towards you.

Asper the animals you don't even have any problem with that because you will be the only tenant to live in the apartment while am away in Dublin with my son,.... aside from the other houses beside. I loves animals alot,, they are my son's friends, and have once has Gerbils, Dogs and Cat before but because of my Job been a Rev. there is no one to take care of then while away and while David not home but been in school.

And again for the pictures of the street...... I don't have now on my laptop but there is very big car park which can contain 2 or 3 cars in the apartment.

Moreover, you only need to pay a security deposit of 600pound to my Lawyer and at least a month rent i hope. Cause that's the requirement from my Lawyer which i was told.

Again, note that money is not the first priority but agreement is the major key. So i will advice that you provide me with your full name and address, intended date of moving in... together with any of your identification, such as drivers license or copy of your Int. Passport. Once i receive this i will prepare here with your contract/agreement form and have it send to you immediately.

I hope you'll understand the little i can tell about the Flat,

looking forward to hearing from you,

Rev James

(more photos attached of outside of a home that looks like it is in Florida or somewhere tropical, certainly not London)

Are you satisfy with that ? Concerning the payment issue like i told you earlier the amount for a week is 280Pounds and the 1year will be 3360Pounds minus the security deposit but i calculate the security deposit all will be 3960Pounds but the security deposit will be refundable after 1year, So tell me can you afford to pay 1year or you will pay 6month first .>
let me know as soon as possible.

Best Regards.

Rev James

Hello Ollie,

Did you see my previous email ? Just want to confirm if you received it . Concerning the Flat you can pay for just 6month and also the security deposit of 600Pounds.
And like i said earlier the amount for a week is 280Pounds so you will now calculate the 6month including the Security deposit and get back to me so that we can reach the conclusion on time.

Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you .

Best Regards.

Hello again,

Sorry for the delay, the Meerkat escaped and attacked a neighbour so I have been busy hiding the Meerkat.

Usually they do not attack people, but this person was making squeaking noises at Poppy the Possum. I think that Marvin the Meerkat must have got very jealous!!!

Have you ever seen a jealous Meerkat??? It is not a pretty sight. If you have ever studied Meerkats, you can always tell when they are going to attack as they tend to 'mark their terrirory' and then make a very high pitched squeak before attacking.

For such a small animal, they way that they can jump so high and bite is amazing. Luckily our neighbour is okay. He did have to go to the hospital, but a tetanus injection and few stitches to his private parts was all that was required. Phew!

Would you be interested in adopting Poppy the Possum? If you would not mind keeping her for yourself, this may make it easier for us to rent your flat, as less animals to watch over is much easier I think. A non jealous Marvin would be ideal!!! Please let me know.

When will you be back in London? I'm very excited about your flat!!! Can't wait to see your lovely home!

Thanks again

Ollie

You should offer to pay 3 years up front if he will meet you in London.

Get him there, and then throw water balloons at him.

Bevo5 is on the right track:

What you need to do now is start costing this guy some money. Offer to pay 3 years up front if he'll meet you at the London airport for a personal tour. Ask him about his church (he's a reverend, right?) and get him to send you a bunch of official documents (that you must have for tax purposes)... basically anything you can think of that will waste his time and get him to start spending his own money. Good luck and good hunting!

No doubt - after seeing all the good stuff at 411 listeater, you need to make this guy spend some money.

Hilarious. I get these emails all the time because of my posts on craigslist for my business. I usually just delete them, but you have inspired me, Ollie.

only a fool would balk on renting a nice, tropical home in london for 280 pounds per week. those are hard to find. and he's a reverend, so he can't be lying to you. why the hesitation? also, why do you have so many animals? that's weird.

oh, and one last thing. i think that towards the end of your game, you should ask him which football team he roots for and then refuse to deal with him because its not the same as yours.

I have to admit, the jealous meerkat line had me laughing.

I agree, you really need to get this fool to waste some of his own money trying to scam you.

Great job keeping him on the line. Although the last one was a bit over the top. Like others have already said, get him to spend his own money and send him out on errands.

Taken on board what you guys have said.

I've just emailed him again and will see if he takes the bait. I'll update if he writes back.

This is indeed awesome and I love the idea of the deal breaker being what football team he claims to root for. Don't let him squirm and feign neutrality. Make him state one.

Also, some of us should respond and make him take up more time than he already is. I need to start responding to stuff like this on Craigslist, it seems fun.

A better idea. Post his email, and then we can feign interest from the States, but ask him to meet us in Houston to close the deal.....
