Golfing on Texas Coast

I was thinking about taking a trip to the Texas coast with a couple friends to play a little golf and visit the beach for a few days in April. Does anyone have some good recommendations for courses in Port A, Corpus, Galveston, Padre, etc? We need public courses and would probably like to pay $35-50 per round, but could spend a little more if it's worth it.

In the Corpus area, you are looking at North Shore and Padre Island Golf Club. North Shore is a little more interesting, as it has a few holes on the water. Padre Island Golf Club is just a run of the mill links course that will always be windy.

Bottom line, do not expect much from either.

if you are going to be in scenic crystal beach texas, might i recommend

rancho caribe

it is, without a doubt, the worst golf course i have ever played. but you get what you pay for. last time i was there, the guy in the "club house" couldnt figure out the cash register, so we just didnt pay.

South Padre Island Country Club isn't bad if you're going down that far. Very windy and it's not actually across the island, it's across the lagoon in Laguna Vista. Open to the public.

This is indeed a tough one. Not a lot to choose from in the Corpus/Port A area.

Definitely not lush or posh by any means, but interesting is the old Oso golf course in CC. The constant wind will mean you have to aim about 45 degrees off line to get the ball on the green. It's laughable sometimes, but if you go with the right attitude and have enough brews it will be entertaining.

The Rockport Country Club might be in a price range outside your limit, but it may be the best course in the area.

I had to chuckle when I saw Northshore mentioned. The year it opened, Golf Digest gave them a booby prize for the "worst use of railroad ties/landscape timbers" in the history of golf course architecture. Despite that, it's a pretty fun course to play and the staff does know how to run the cash register.

If you want to try some "lowbrow" golf, think Dan Jenkins-type golf fiction humor, give it a whack off the hardpan at the Rob and Bessie Welder course just outside Sinton on 181. Fondly refered to back in the day as the "Royal and Ancient Rob and Bessie."

"Fariways and greens" to you.

Thanks for all the replies, but it seems the Texas coast lacks a good selection of playable golf courses. We've decided to screw the coast and just head up to Dallas to try some of their courses. Looked online and it seemed like they had some good ones such as Tangleridge, Texas Star, Coyote Ridge, etc. No beach, but golf was the original priority. Maybe we can lay out with some beers in one of the bunkers.

I'd always heard that the course in Victoria (unsure of the name) was top-notch and a hidden gem. Is it Victoria Country Club??
