Golf Lessons

Wondering if anyone knows of a good place to get some golf lessons. I live around MOPAC and Anderson lane and want something close and don't really want to pay more than $50 an hour. Any suggestions would be great.

You could try clinics at Golfsmith's main facility, I-35 and Braker. Not as individualized as lessons, but waaaaaaay less expensive and in most cases just as effective. Since you're on Mopac, might want to see if Hank Haney up there at Mopac and Braker has clinics too.

Gordon, What stage of a golfer are you:
Beginner
25+ Handicap
15-25 Handicap
8-14 Handicap
3-8 Handicap
3- Handicap

How does one figure handicap???

On my first try, I shot a 117 at Blackhawk. We did not shoot from the black tees but from the white ones. I would have used the womens but people were watching.

Technically, in that situation you're an 8. The "plus" designates an average score BELOW par. "+8" would indicate that you would be expected to shoot 64 on a par 72 course

.

Handicap is the best 13 of your last 15 rounds, with the two lowest thrown out, tabulated as stated above. (USGA, obviously you can handicap differently)

Also, I met Rick Arnett while he was one of the pros at Ben White. Liked him. He's now pro out at Great Hills CC, which isn't too far from you. Don't know his rates.

USGA hdcp is based on course rating, isn't it? And the two highest are thrown out?

handicap is not your score minus par, at all.

it's your best 10 of your last 20 scores...indexed with course rating. and, if you always shot 8 over on a course with a rating of 72 and whatever a "par" slope would be you'd still not be a +8, you'd be more like a +6.

if you want to do it online, here's yahoo's site that is mirrored, but not guaranteed to be, the same as the USGA:

and i just realized that i haven't played but twice since last july and if i went out with this handicap right now i'd be toast....1.5 index, ouch!

Here is the official USGA way to calculate your handicap (all sites that purport to use this probably do, since it is not a secret).

You take your last 20 rounds. For each score you subtract the course rating for the course played and then: multiply the result by 113 and divide by the course's slope rating for that round. You will then get a number (called a differential) for each of your last 20 rounds. You take the 10 lowest of these differentials, average those 10 and take 96% of the average (round to tenths). That is your handicap index.

To determine your course handicap (strokes to be given) for a specific course you are about to play, you can look at the chart posted somewhere at the course. The chart will give you the handicap based on your handicap index and the tees you will play. You can also have this calculated at the usga's website if you know the slope rating of the tees you will play.

The handicap system is not designed to simply be the average number of strokes over par. It is not an "average" of your ability. It is designed to be a measure of your "potential." The way the system is designed, you are supposed to "play to your handicap" about 20% of the time.

One other note - when using scores to calculate your handicap, you are also supposed to implement "Equitable Stroke Control." This basically gives you a maximum score you can take for each individual hole based on your course handicap (prevents super high individual hole scores from artificially inflating your handicap). The Equitable Stroke Control maximum hole scores are as follows:

Course Handicap Max. on any given hole
9 or less Double Bogey
10-19 7
20-29 8
30-39 9
40 or more 10
