anyone taken lessons in Houston? I'm thinking about going down to Memorial Park to see about lessons... but I've also talked to the pro at Clear Creek GC about lessons there..
Check out Matt Swanson at Wildcat Golf Academy, or you can go to the Golf Advantage School at Kingwood Country Club(the club is private, but you can take lesson at the school even if you are not a member). I take lessons from Chip at KWCC. They have a lot of great video equipment and will film you lesson. If you do not get your swing on film so you can see what you are doing then you are wasting your time and money. Make sure they have that wherever you go it they do not go somewhere else.

valid issue with the video... Kingwood is way too far away for me though... I live near downtown and unfortunately I don't think that Memorial Park has any video system....
Give Louis Gantz a call at Battleground GC in Deer Park. I haven't been to that course as I live in Austin now, but he was great out at Southwyck back when I was in high school.
Dogg,
Go check out the wildcat website. It will give you lots of info on their golf academy. KWCC is not that far. I am a member there and live in the midtown area. The freeway up there is expanded and I can get there in 25 minutes from my house. I realize that is not just down the street, but hell it takes me that long to get anywhere else.
Luis Gantz is a pretty good teacher, but I will say that I bought my wife a series of lesson from him when he was at Southwyck, and he no showed her 3 times in a row. He ended up giving me my money back.
Also there is Jim Phenecie at Wind Rose. I really like his style.
Memorial has video lessons. Call Carl Collura 713.898.1150, he does video lessons in that shack down on the end where you buy range balls. He's a salty old guy who is a big Hogan disicple.

cool.. will do so.. I've got a buddy who is working with Hut Smith at Memorial right now and is really improving drastically...
but I'll check out Wildcat first.. I love their facilities... I hate the fact that at Memorial you have to hit off of Astroturf... that **** sucks..
There are others at WC who can give you a quality golf lesson other than Swanson. I'd be careful of anyone teaching a Hogan type swing. That is a very difficult swing upon which to model yourself. Some good fundamentals in the swing, but most people don't have the large, quick hands needed to pull it off.
Agree on the Hogan comment. Carl got me on plane and got me to stop casting the club, but he did want me to get in a pretty tough position, and then whip my hands through at the very end. This worked about 50% of the time and resulted in me being able to hit a 6 iron 185 yards with about a 9 iron trajectory, and spin hard back to the pin. The other half of the time I would shank it straight right.
After my lessons were over I concentrated on just the plane, a full shoulder turn, and uncoiling. I don't cast, but I do have my hands in a decent position which doesn't require any drastic moves at the bottom of my swing. The result is a pretty consistent swing that has my distances at about average (8 iron about 145-150), normal trajectory with little or no spin, but the shanks are gone.
****.. an 8-iron 145?!? hahahaha.. damn... I hit my 5-iron that far... I suck...
it's a good thing I've got a good atitude on the course, cause it isn't easy being the strongest guy out there and hitting the ball so weakly... people expect you to mash the ball, but in reality it is better to not be as big as me...
Suttree,
Sounds like we have gone through some of the same golf issues. For a long time I tried to emulate the Hogan swing in order to eliminate a big hook. It worked for a while, but you need very large, strong, quick hands in order to really make it work, and if your timing is off you will end up with a whicked case of the shanks. I have since abandoned that and worked on hitting a nice controlled draw. It will occasionally downgrade itself into a hook, but I have better control over it now. At times when I get in a hook funk I will go back to the high fade that Hogan loved so much, but it is usually a short term fix to get me through a round. When done properly it is a great thing, but done poorly and you will have no end to the frustration of a prolonged case of the shanks. I also think part of the reason this swing was not a long term method for me was the amount of pressure it puts on the wrists. I am starting to get some serious tendinitis and a bone spur on my wrist and simply cannot "lag" my hands and whip them trough the hitting zone in that extreme without major pain.
