Golf Clubs

I dont play Golf regularly. I suck at Golf. But... I would like a cheap set of clubs to start playing with. Any suggestions for low end clubs that will make me happy? What price am I looking at after all drivers, wedges, irons, putters, bag? Thanks!

depending on your money situation and how hardcore you wanna get early on, you could perhaps get a set of odd # irons along with a driver and 3 wood for a 150 bucks or less just so you can learn the basics, go through golfsmith to get some clubs on the cheap

once you get into it more you'll want to upgrade your equipment obviously

For beginner and even not beginner irons, you can't beat Tommy Armour 845s. Good quality clubs for less than $200 brand new. Golfsmith was running a deal a while back that included the irons plus a bag, driver, 3 & 5 wood for around $400. I haven't hit their woods but I've hit those irons and they're nice.

As always, you can probably get them cheaper on e-bay.

Knowing what I know now, for beginner woods I'd go to Golfsmith and get them to build me a HiCor 3 and 5. You'll spend about $30 on the head, $3 max for a grip, and you can get decent graphite shafts for under $20. Seems like they charge $25 or so to assemble but if you're marginally competent with tools and have a hacksaw it's not hard to do yourself, you just have to buy epoxy, grip tape, and grip solvent (roughly $20?). Basically, you've got a wood that's every bit as good as a $200 Titlest for $80 or so. I know you say you want something cheap and I understand that but imho it's better to spend a little extra up front for something decent - doesn't have to be Taylor Made, but decent - and you'll be much happier in the long run.

A lot of people will say get used clubs from Instant Replay. I've done that with woods and wedges but to honest with you, it's kind of hit or miss unless you really know what you're doing. I ended up with some woods that were cut too long and it screwed me up trying to hit them, especially while I was learning. Wedges aren't quite as bad because people don't usually jack with shafts on wedges, but sometimes they do change the loft or lie. It also seems that used wedges aren't the bargain that used woods are, especially the good ones like Clevelands or Titlest Vokeys (although I managed to score a damn nice 56* Vokey at Play It Again Sports for $20 right before Christmas). But, you can get good lesser known brands like Ray Cook or Zevo for $30 at Golfsmith brand new, or they can build you one. You'll need at least a 56* sand wedge and maybe a 52* gap wedge.

I'd hold off on getting a driver for a while. They're hard as hell to hit and you'll just frustrate yourself that much more by trying. I've been at this golf crap two years and I just two weeks ago started actually carrying my driver on the course.

I don't putt worth squat, so I can't help you there.

And a word of warning. If you are just starting take lessons from a pro and ignore your friends when they try to help you tweak your swing.

Serious, Academy hs cheap sets ranging from 99-700 dollars. If you are a beginner, they would have a complete set except a putter for around 159.

I agree the original Tommy Armour 845s are probably the best overall value for a beginner.

By my count I have owned over 15 separate full sets of irons, so I speak from experience. But no matter what technology you buy, it will not give you a solid, repeating swing. The only thing that will give you that is a good fundemental understanding of the golf swing and hitting about 100,000 balls.

Even now my swing will completely leave me for no apparent reason. On one shot during my backswing I will feel everything perfectly aligned, and will not immediately I will hit a pure shot. Literally the very next swing will feel foreign and I just have to trust it. Then there are days when the concept of the golf swing seems physically impossible, and I disintegrate into a reverse pivoting shanker. I usually just quit on these rounds.

Damn! When I bought my Armour 855's they were middle tier clubs that competed directly against the Titleist DCI's. It appears that now the forged cavitybacks are all the rage and that I am playing with low end equipment

Even though I play like crap now and can't break 80 I must look the part

Looks like I need to update the equipment. I was going to take the tax refund and put new rubber on both cars, now it looks like I need to 86 the wife's car tires and buy some new sticks.
