Golf Clubs in Austin

I'm thinking of joining a golf club in Austin, and I was wondering if anyone on this board was a member or knew about any of the clubs in town. I'm thinking along the lines of Great Hills or Balcones Country Club, because as much as I'd love to join Austin Country Club or Barton Creek, neither one is financially feasible. Does anyone have any opinions?
 
Star Ranch out near Pflugerville is offering a lifetime membership, that I believe goes for $16,000. I have only played there twice, but it has real potential when it matures.

I too have been interested in joining a golf club and was thinking of contacting both those clubs... Have you inquired about prices etc?

Balcones is habving some sort of buddy package they are offering. You might want to check it out.

I joined Balcones a few months ago and am really enjoying it. It doesn't hurt that I live ~3 blocks from Spicewood clubhouse.

Balcones - front 9 pretty easy, back nine holes 10-16 are tough. Greens inconsistent, front 9 in fair/average shape, back 9 good.

Spicewood - better course overall, greens consistent and better shape. Good mix of holes, only drawback is only one bunker (#9). Balcones has plenty of beach-filled fun.

Balcones is overall the best price/value of the clubs in town. FYI RiverPlace is having a deal right now to get in pretty cheap, monthly dues are higher, but it's a great course/facility.

One thing I've heard about Balcones is they have tons of members, and that even with two courses, it's still pretty crowded. What's your take?
