Golf Balls

Discuss Brands, experiences. I'm too crappy to play with anything except reloads or top flite, but I'm curious.

I've played most brands...Titleist, Nike, Dunlop, Wilson, Srixon, Slazenger, etc. I currently play Maxfli A3's and M3's and have for a couple of years now. Both are a good long lasting ball with distance AND feel. The Revolution is a good choice as well (solid). I like Titleist too...but sometimes the funds aren't there to afford the Pro-V1's.

You want us to discuss various golf ball types, but you aren't good enough to take advantage of our recommendations?

There is pro-v1 and there is everything else. That's the bottom line.

If I could play any ball for free then i would play the Pro V1. But, because I dont get to play anything for free, I nearly always play the NIKE Tour Accuracy. The NIKE TA's are only $9.99 a dozen at SAM's. So far, they are the best ball for the price, IMO.

Pro-v1 is good.
I happen to think the Callaway HX Tour is better. Maybe I'll give the V1s another try. It's been a few years since I've hit them. I strongly disliked the Pro-V1x though

I really like the Pro-V1, but I'm with wooderson. If I'm paying for it, I usually go for the Titleist NXT Tour. Very good ball for the price.

TA2-LNG play much like the ProV1, I've found. Easy to find at Academy or Target for $19.95 or something like that. Good ball. I agree on the HX-tour, but I still find that ball a little harder than the V1, and I enjoy that softer feel.

Friendly tip:

Watch the logo overrun bins at Golfsmith. Last week I picked up 2 dozen brand new Pro V1's and Pro V1x's for $14.99/dozen.

I might be playing Randy Youngman's ball, but it feels damn good.

I play the NXT Tours - even though the ProV1s are good - I actually prefer less spin.

Get ready for the New Callaway ball that Mickelsen has been playing for some time but not yet in stores. It's the Callway 56 - has some interesting aeros on the dimples.

My brother-in-law told me that Srixon's are essentially knock-off Pro-V1's. Yea or nay?

I'll hit all kinds (within reason) 'cept Top Flite. Hate 'em. Don't know why. I just do. If I'm buying, I'll go with Titelist NXT Tours or DT So/Lo's. I was given a sample sleeve of Nike Mojo balls a few weeks back and I really liked how they played.

My uncle gave me a box of Srixons a few months ago, and they had a great feel. Calling 'em a knockoff of ProV1's is a pretty good description. The only problem I had with them is their covers are awfully soft, and when you're hitting as many rocks, trees, cart paths, other golfers, etc. as I am, you tend to get scuffed up balls pretty quickly.

Unless you are good enough to justify the price, pro V1's are not worth it to the avg joe golfer.

I really like the Precept Laddie as well.
You can get a good deal on the original laddie, b/c there is a new laddie out. I really like the new one, but the older ones are chepaer and not that much different.

btw: I shoot 88-95 range.

I played my best round in 15 years with spare Srixon my Dad tossed me the other day. I will probably buy a sleeve to test the theory a little bit closer. But, I will probably continue to play the ProV1's for the most part.

I bought 5 boxes of 2005 ProV1's before the season. A guy I picked up with while playing one day let me try his new Wilson Staff Px4 ball for a hole.

I returned all ProV1s, bought 5 boxes of Px4's, then used the rest of the leftover money to buy some badass Nike SP-5's and some shirts at golfsmith.

They play great in the Texas wind, spin great, are soft as ProV1s, and have been a good part of bringing my average scores to the mid-70s. For 29.99 a box, they're the best my money can buy.

I couldn't recommend them higher.

The average golfer can't really generate enough swing speed to compress the PROV1 like it wants to be.

I take that back. The average golfer can't really generate enough swing speed to compress the PROV1 and deliver the clubface square to ball at impact all at the same time.

That last post brings up a good question.....what is the average golfers' swing speed? Last time I was gauged I was averaging right at about 108.

I must be getting good because I can walk past hazards now without searching for balls. Also, I have a bag of about 100 old balls I'm just waiting to go shag somewhere. i am actually playing 1-2 balls per round, and today even replaced a ball just cause it was scuffed (not lost).

i'm shooting 85-92, and still can't really tell the difference in balls. Top flights sem real hard when putting. I got a dozen staffs for ten bucks at that used golf place on Burnet, and they seem good. Maybe I'll try overun V1's or Srixon next time.
