Going to Lockhart Sunday

Might be taking the in-laws.

Where should I eat? I haven't been back since Kreutz's moved and that's the only place I had previously been.

Pretty sure Kreuz's is closed on Sundays. Check on Smitty's (the old Kreuz location, has character) or Chisolm Trail (the current fave of locals) -- if they're open, those are two good choices.

I've never been a big fan of Black's.

I went to Smitty's last Sunday. it was really good...not as good as Kreuz's used to be, but really good. however, that is just a super cool spot to go eat at. love the buidling. I was a bit dissapointed they painted the dining room...I used to love how you could see the smoke stains on the wall.

Thanks for the tips on appropriate attire. I read that thread and if I dressed myself like that I'd be laughing too hard to drive down there.

Had a 1:30 hearing in Caldwell County. Stopped at Kruetz on the way in for lunch. Brisket and a sausage. Economical, yes, $7. Bland, greasy sausage and moist, but overspiced brisket. I guess the no sauce concept is ok if you're trying to go for the purist approach, but that would only seem to work if your 'que was the very best. I think a dash of vinegary sauce can be awesome. I keep trying Kruetz and trying it, but I'm just not seeing it when compared to other places. I took a small cooler with me to take home extras, but passed. My hearing got continued, so I'll try some other things and the brisket again in two weeks, and will stop at Chisolm Trail on the way back. Someone said that was where the locals go now and have never tried it. Black's and Smitty's have lost all credibility at this point.

drive another 8 miles and go to city market in luling. It is across from the railroad tracks. I have been going there on the way to rockport for 20 years. They serve the meat on butcher paper like ti is supposed to be done. The sausage with their barbecue sauce is ridiculous. Believe me, it is worth it. It has not changed in 20 years. Smittys sucks, kreuz has fallen of, and chisholm trail should be shut down. But hey, dont listen to me. I have only eaten at almost every joint in texas.

These seem to be all over the board. My folks live in Lockhart, and I get to eat there pretty regularly. I have had outstanding que at all of them. I have had what I felt like was below average que at all of them at one time or another, but on average I would say in my own opinion that Smitty's has been the most consistent and outstanding. Kruez's has been very good, but the last few times through there the chop was very dry, and brisket only avg. Blacks is to me just okay on its best day and the same with Chisholm trail though that one is occasionally great. To me SMitty's is more often than not the cream of the crop though I have had some dry brisket there once or twice, but those times it was the end of the day and they only had poor cuts remaining. Overall the chop, ribs, prime rib, sausage and my goodness that brisket is to me the best out there. It is just remarkeable to me, but again I can see where someone going through might get that one time where they are a little off. THat happens more with bbq than other food it seems.

I know how it is, and I've been disappointed at all of my favorite places one time or another. The experience at Smitty's was not an "end of the day" problem. It was between 12 and 1 on a Saturday.

I could almost excuse the brisket, as it is the most susceptible to being off, but the sausage was a complete waste of stomach space, and there's no real excuse for that.

Being in SA, the only real incentive to go to Lockhart is to try the places I haven't sampled yet. Luling is closer, and Llano is worth the drive if I want as close to a gurantee as I can get. The BBQ Patio on the far south side is excellent as well.

I had my follow up hearing in Lockhart Thursday afternoon. I took an earlier posters advice and decided to go to Luling after so many busts in Lockhart. Left the office in Austin at noon for a 2:30 hearing. Drove straight through Lockhart and went to City Market in Luling. It had been years since I had been there.

Correct call. Brisket: perfect. Some of the best I have ever had. Pork ribs: perfect, so juicy and tender, slight crisp on the outside. Links: I prefer pork sausage, but this was still great. They have an unusual mustardy based sauce that is just incredible. I bought two pints to take home and I am using it on smoked bone-in pork chops tonight. Great old fashioned place with an attached smoke house in the back, super friendly folks who appreciate your business. I had enough to stuff myself at a very long lunch and take home another serving for me and one of my coworkers late that afternoon: $15.

So much better than those overrrated places in Lockhart. Anyone who appreciates great 'que should drive the extra 14 miles from Lockhart to get to this place. Overall rating: 9.8. Although I am struggling to come up with a reason that its not a 10 other than principle in my lifelong quest to find the perfect 'que. City Market is one of the best places in central Texas. I dont get to Caldwell County much, but I am in Hays County in the mornings a lot, and I envision a lot of long detours back to Austin via Luling in the future.

While I don't share the hate for Smitty's and Kreuz's that others seem to, in my limited experience I would agree that City Market beats them both.

I'm not so sure that it is hatred, rather, just that folks have figured out what is plainly obvious, that the food at the places in Lockhart are overrated and mediocre at best. Sometimes places get hyped up, cannot back it up, and don't compare to great, real 'que. People have caught on to this fact, thats all.

Oooooooh...................booyah "jimmyjizz". Your opinion is obviously **** because it's not someone else's opinion.

I fear there is a recent influx of 15 year olds on HF.

thought jimmyjizz sounded funny....meant no disrespect. i am not 15, been on here for more than 3 years and also contribute financially when i can (sorry its been awhile). I just cant stand going somewhere and the food is hit or miss. it all sucks at that point. city market is ALWAYS good.

continue on....
