Going Out in Chicago

Looking for an area to barhop next weekend. Already have plans to go to Wrigleyville one night. We are in our late 20's.

What are you all into? Bars? Clubs? Jazz? There is so much of everything, it would help if you would narrow it down

Blues club recommendations would be good. We like more casual, pub type places and enjoy live music. Do not want to do the shiny shirt, dance club type of thing. We are staying in the theater district.

You will love Chicago then. If you needed club recommendations, you were going to get them from me.

Wrigleyville is the busiest especially with the Cubs starting up. All the bars are cool except Moes ($6 beers and douche bags)

Southport is a 15 minute walk from Wrigleyville and has some chill bars and restaurants. Its less drunk/touristy than Wrigleyville. I would recommend Justins (if they have their beer garden open) and Southport Lanes.

Lincoln Park (off Lincoln Ave from Armitage to Fullerton) is more of the college age bars.

Bucktown (northwest of downtown) is the same type of area as Southport/Wrigley. I dont really have any recommendations because I live in Wrigleyville and never make it down there.

Downtown I would recommend going to the Hancock Tower bar if the weather is clear before you go out. It has an amazing view. There is also Rush St. which caters more to the older crowd.

For jazz/blues, my favorite is Green Mill. It was Capones favorite bar. It doesnt seem like its changed since the 30s. It is pretty far north though. Kingston Mines is also pretty cool.

This has reviews for everything.

Hope this helps

Thanks! This is eactly what I wanted. Can you see the views from the Hancock at night?

We are also looking for reccomendations on cheap, local eats e.g. deep dish pizza, Chicago style hot dogs, italian beef.

Perfect thread for me. A group of friends and I are going to Chicago in two weeks.

We definitely are not looking to go to uber trendy places. In fact ,we don't want to dress up at all.

The view is best at night at the Hancock

Here are some of my favorites:
Italian Beef - Mr. Beef (on Orleans south of Chicago Ave.) is freakin awesome

Pizza - You cant really go wrong. My favorite downtown is Lou Malnatis, but every place is good.

Sandwiches - Pannes Bread Company (Sheffield and Wellington) is amazing and cheap

There are billions of hot dog places. I go to Murphys Red Hot because its close to my apartment, but all of them are awesome

please make sure and plan ahead for the bars grandfathered in to stay open until 4 am, serving alcohol until close.

there is one cool one we went to with really nice food/service. i need to find the name.

quieter, not a loud clubby place, but cool to go sit, eat good food and finish getting hammered.

I also second the rec. of the hancock center bar.

And I know you said you can't really go wrong with pizza, but what are the landmark places that out of towners are recommended to try?

I like crowds and *** so I'm going to reiterate the Wrigleyville is a good time.

But I also want to say that Southport Lanes is the poo if you've got a good group. And it's closer to 5 minutes walk from Wrigley than it is 15. Unless you're walking on your hands. Which would be awesome.

I highly recommend going to Murphy's in Wrigleyville. DAGMAR took me there and it was a blast.

As for pizza, I went to giordano's last year and thought it was totally amazing.

Here are a couple of pics:

That looks like Giordano's alright!

I could only eat a slice or two at one sitting, and carrying that pizza around felt like I was carrying a bookbag.

club lago for italian (its sort of out of your way in downtown, but its worth it).

eppys or perrys for sandwiches.

the last time i went to chicago i compiled a rather large list of recommended (by friends and websites) restaurants in or near downtown. here is a download link if you want it. we spent a week there and everywhere we ate was nothing less than spectacular.

oh, for the OP, y'all would really like cafe iberico. it is a spanish tapas place, but with a really loud crazy bar.

While I don't like Chicago style pizza very much Giordano's was good and I think you can get a regular style there too that is really good. Their wings are badass though.

Man I love Chicago, great town.

Just for fun for my husband's 30 birthday. We are going to see Widespread Panic at the Majestic Theater 2 nights.

As others have noted, Chicago is an awesome place...so many bars/pubs to choose from in so many different neighborhoods.

My wife and I visited a few friends there early in March and never left Lincoln Park (where both couples live.) Even though there are a few college pubs, I remember most of them being a 25-35 crowd. The best part is there is a pub on almost every other corner. All tolld, we went to 10 different pubs (all walking around) Fri-Sat in Lincoln Park. Gaslight and Rocks (or Rox) are cool bars with good food too. Wrightwood Tap was more of the college scene. Prost is a cool German style pub (also across the street from Lou Malnatis), Matisse was sweet, and Paddy's Irish Bar had a cool Euro, futbol scene the night we went. Burwood Tap was a little odd, but they did serve free popcorn.
