But, we did get an e mail confirming tickest to the Tech game. Never been to a game in Lubbock so would appreciate any advice, what to expect, etc.

Travel in a group of Horn fans. Tech idiots are a bunch of drunk tools who would love to pick a fight with you when you are outnumbered

Safety in numbers. Don't be too obnoxious. I am not a spring chicken, but I've had Tech fans (younger) come up to me and stick the horns down in my face. I don't even look at anybody, look straight ahead, keep my mouth shut.

After the game? When we win, they leave you alone. When we were beating the sheet out of them in '04, most of the TT fans left at the end of the 3rd quarter. We were even welcomed into their Alumni Center!!

In the Tech weight/training room all the dates for the season games are hung from the ceiling. For this next season, there are three target games with the dates in red. Those are the dates for the National Championship, the Big 12 Championship, and Sept 18 UT vs Tech. I've never been, but I think it's going to be intense.

i (unfortunately) lived in lubbuttock several years. you may find a number of people who are very friendly & several who are total shits (pay attention to the recommendation to travel in a group...a number of folks have gotten the **** beaten out of them for wearing the "wrong" colors to a tceh loss). weather-wise, it will either be 103 in the shade (there is NO shade) or 34 with snow &/or sand blowing (it COULD be a lovely late summer day but don't count on it...be prepared for anything). socially, the main activity is getting drunk (careful, despite more practice they don't drive drunk any better than we do) and going to the mall (if you're lucky, you might see Jody Conrad there). if driving to lubbuttock, once you pass the Edwards Plateau it gets VERY BORING (try not to sleep-drive). at the game; if we are winning big (2 touchdowns +) the stadium will be empty before end of the 3rd quarter; if we win close you will hear how bad the refs and we cheat (STAY IN A GROUP); and if they win, leave town as soon as the clock hits 0.00 (they are worse winners than they are losers).

most of all, be glad you're not an aggy...tceh people have great longhorn-penis envy, but they friggin' HATE agroid and are rude as hell to those people (tcehies do have their upside).

otherwise, you should have a great time.

I lived up there for three years and loved the place. But they do have a thing about the Horns.

Most of their fans are great but some of the students get out of hand so I would avoid that problem by getting a Tech hat and wearing it to the stadium. ONce you are among fellow horns, switch hats. But put the Tech hat back on when you leave.

That smell is money. Lots of it in those feedlots.

I grew up in a rural area and it did not bother me but some city people find it offensive. Sort of the way urban traffic affects the rural brethren. You may ask how they stand it and say you are glad you don't live there.

My stay was made more pleasant by the fact that Joe Ely lived next door and his buddies practiced there. Lots of good musicians in Lubbock.

Expect the idiots to tear their own stadium apart and cheer like they're doing something great.

Oh, and they're gonna throw tortillas on the field. It's not an actual football tradition, but an incredible simulation!

Agree wi some above. Stay home or move in large groups.

After 2008, I sent the following letter. Only got a reply from some student athletic assistant. (sorry for the length)

Dear Dr. Bailey:

My wife and I are graduates of the University of Texas. We and many of our friends are Longhorn fans and have been to sporting events for over 20 years including football and baseball games at Texas Tech. After the 2008 football game in Lubbock we will never attend another sporting event in Lubbock. In fact, I will never stay in Lubbock, go to a restaurant, or buy fuel there again if I have to pass through. Many of our motor home friends share the same view.

Let me explain. We have experienced terrible fan behavior (fights) at baseball games including Tech fans thrown out of the stadium. The 2008 football game was our worst game experience ever. The concept of the students camping out to get tickets was clever. However the lack of dumpsters and porta-potties showed a lack of planning. When we arrived at the stadium about 2 hours before kickoff we felt that we were walking through a sanitary landfill. It was disgusting. Trash, beer cans, coolers, and other unmentionables were everywhere.

Additionally, there was a distinct lack of security in the stadium and the parking areas. It was a terrible experience. We were with a group of senior citizens and they were all but attacked by drunken Tech students. Maybe your security people should check what fans are bringing into the stadium. The young couple in front of us was openly sharing a bottle of booze. I know you can’t keep it out of the stadium, but you can try. We were not even checked coming in.

Finally, the Tech student behavior is out of control. They were tearing up the benches and passing them around. Several members of our group (all over sixty) were physically harassed. The students rushed the field early and then again when the game was over. In my view that should be stopped. If one person stumbles people are going to be hurt. Remember the Texas A&M bonfire?

I know that Tech wants to be a top tier university but this behavior will not help make the case. We take every opportunity to remind my friends and traveling partners of the “Terrible Tech experience.”

Dont go. Spend the money on a HD Tv if you don't have one.
One of the worst gameday experiences you will ever find. Gameday is not what you would call a "chamber of commerce" day for Lubbock.

We have gone in 02, 04, and 06. Had great times each time, even when we lost in 02. We have friends that go to school there so that helps. Just don't wear Texas gear the night before the game or the night after and you probably won't get harrassed.

It has become like entering a war zone. They do confront you, even if you are older fans. My cousin and his wife were cussed out leaving the game a few years ago, he's a retired college professor, and attended Tech for one year.
We went to the Texas Exes get-together, which was at a bar/restaurant, walked straight to the game and got the hell out right afterwards, before they had time to mobilize, on my last trip there.
One word of advice, don't try to drive straight back to Austin after the night game. It is hard to stay awake, and it is the height of deer season-deer were everywhere around Mason and Brady. They line the road and look for cars to jump in front of, their version of extreme sport.
I've been several times over the years, but it often is a very unpleasant experience, and I may have attended my last game in Lubbock. I'll leave it to the younger daredevils out there to uphold our banner on the plains.

The worst part is that when Leach was there, he encouraged the students' terrible behavior. He was asked last year what he thought about Tech fans being voted the worst in the Big 12 in some poll, and he said he was proud of it because that means their fans are aggressive.

I don't know what Tuberville can or will do to change things, but I will never go to another game there until there is noticeable improvement in the way their fans behave. The last time I went was '06. I was physically confronted once by a very drunk guy who appeared to be in his late 30s. Other than that, it was mostly just verbal assault the entire time. I don't think I passed by anyone under the age of 40 who didn't hurl some sort of vulgarity in my direction.

I am sure there are some friendly Tech fans, but they are, by and large, horrible. And I agree that Lubbock is not exactly a happening place. I feel bad that a lot of Texas fans are reluctant to go because it's not fair to our team, but I just don't think the trip is worth the time and money.
