It’s excellent. By far the best Godzilla movie ever made. I saw it in black and white. Some locations show it in color. All showings are in Japanese with English subtitles. Of course, this will leave a large segment of the US market thinking “WTF is this?!?!?”
Action scenes: The best ever made in this genre. Some Jurassic Park, some Jaws, some Sink the Bismarck, and of course some Godzilla laying waste to Tokyo.
Drama scenes: Very good. They’ve never had anything like this in a monster movie before. Very Japanesey. The Kamikaze pilot who makes it back alive and the 1/2 the people (especially the women) who shun and humiliate him vs the 1/2 who say he did the right thing and the war was already lost by that time. The utter devastation of the war and post war. The ongoing honor given to their Veterans vs the disdain others hold for the high military leadership who led them to destruction. And more and more destruction piled on top of the destruction.
Some of the Chinese press is having a cow, because a former IJN Admiral rallies the civilians to take on Godzilla. Another concept throughout the movie is that, from the Japanese standpoint— we appreciate the power of the Americans, and we’re sure glad that they’re on our side now, but we have to defend these islands ourselves.
