God I hate hockey

That's Right

hockey sucks. That year that they went on strike was the best year ever. No Hockey ruining Sportscenter and taking up half of top plays with a bunch of crappy-*** "highlights". I hope the NHL goes on permanent strike.

wow. just wow. My big issue is that they keep having this baseball crap take up broadcast time so that there is much less about WC qualifiers, college football, and the opening of the NHL.
Only old people want to watch a 'sport' that is about as fast as watching paint dry.

hockey rules, but then again, I bet you don't like soccer either.

I take it back. you're right. only old people watch baseball.

You're mostly correct, but at least once in a while they quit skating around and start beating on each other with sticks, and then some fan throws a dead octapus onto the ice, so you do have that.

I used to be a big hockey fan. Hand carried my seat deposit over to the Stars' office when it was first announced they were coming to Dallas. But the strike year weaned me off it (and moved me much more onto big time soccer). Yes it's exciting and all because of the speed and violence, and yes these guys display enormous athletic ability. They do stuff on ice that most athletes can't do standing still on dry ground. BUT, is there another sport where scoring is more random and accidental? I ain't buying that all those tips and redirections are intentional and foreseeable. Do you really want games decided by such unpredictable events (the soft or ugly goal, which is most of 'em)? I've heard the game described as "one continuous mistake," and that's a little harsh, but only a little. Control in hockey is so fleeting 99% of the time (Gretzky, yada yada, I know) - maybe because of the speed - that accidents and happenstance decide scoring just about as much as or more than skill. That's largely why I'm mostly out on hockey nowadays.

Yea,
according to your I am sure 'random' sampling of baseball fans, ALL baseball fans are women. I never knew that!
Baseball is at the height of its revenue generating ability in the US. Baby boomers grew up with MLB as the ONLY major sport in the US. They are very loyal, but younger generations are not as into baseball as older ones, and I haven't seen any type of study to show that individuals prefer different sports as they age.
Soccer appeals to people from all over the world who move to the US, and also to the ever growing Hispanic population.
With regards to speed of the game. I would argue that even in high scoring baseball game, the game itself is MUCH slower than hockey or soccer. There are huge breaks in action. Heck, after watching a bunch of soccer, I notice that the NFL seems slow to me because they huddle. lol.

Also, I don't think I am the only one who sees similarities between soccer and hockey. Hockey is to me at least a great deal like soccer on ice. You can't really use your hands, offside is similar (not the same obviously), there is a goalie protecting a net...... Penalty shots, shootouts.....

Also, you might be from Texas, but consider this. While I don't believe it is true anymore, about 10 years ago Texas had MORE professional hockey teams than any other state OR Canadian province. Now, obviously having something like 15 (I think this is close to right) professional hockey teams in Texas was too many, there are still quite a few around.

I love football and it will always be my number one because I grew up playing it and it is a religion in West Texas.

That said, Hockey is absolutely amazing and has fast risen to my second favorite sport. It is an amazing sport to watch in person or in HD. It doesn't translate well to regular TV.

The hand eye coordination, speed, skill, & violence (hitting & occasional fights) in the game appeal to me.

My 9 yr old son plays hockey and absolutely loves it. He loves contact and is very aggressive. He gets crap from kids at school about the game not being tough, while most of those kids are playing flag football. I firmly believe that hockey players are tougher and better overall athletes than any other major sport with Rugby being the possible exception.

Hook 'em

Hockey requires the most athleticism out of any organized sport. Truthfully, we Americans don't appreciate that kind of stuff. We like it when everyday dudes we went to high school with can excel at sports, and hockey generally isn't one of them unless you grew up in Canada.

Is this thread a joke ?

There is more action in five minutes of a playoff hockey game than the entire NBA season.

And you obviously have never been to an NHL game or you would not have tried to compare the hotness of women at a baseball game to a hockey game. It is not even close.

All those random chick photos seem a little pervy (for the guy taking the pictures, not me for looking at them!).

The Orlando Sentinel had a one-liner during the hockey strike that I thought pretty well summed it up: "you know, it's almost like the whole sport never happened."

dude, you're the biggest HR bait I've ever seen. Can I take you fishing with me? Wait, fish only bite moron, not completely ******* stupid. Nevermind

I don't hate hockey, I just don't really enjoy watching it. It definitely annoys me when it takes up a good part of Sportscenter. Same thing with Nascar. The year that hockey was gone was a great year because they showed a lot of College baseball and softball on ESPN that year.

Top plays tonight a PERFECT exaple of what I'm talking about. Play #3 is an alley-oop to LeBron in which his head is above the rim. Even someone who hates sports can appreciate that. Play #2 was to me an ordinary, run of the mill goal by Leclavlier (sp?) that did not warrant a "wow" but rather a face of disgust that this crap is taking up the SC highlights. Bullcrap.

I love hockey. To be good at it, it requires major elements of the "Big Three" sports:

1. You need the brute strength of football.
2. You need the stamina of basketball.
3. You need the finesse of baseball.

The puck moves in excess of 100 mph and the teams change lines on the fly. They skate -- all-out -- for about 45 seconds to a minute. The stickhandling is amazing. The goalie has a frozen piece of rubber coming at him, from any angle, at more than 100 mph.

My God, what's not to like?

I also love baseball, football and basketball. I like volleyball. I can watch tennis and golf. But I absolutely cannot stand soccer.

And yes, I've played that stupid sport.
