....at least until Monday.
so I was running through the increasingly slim scenarios that would result in the Astros making the playoffs and it became very apparent how much the Astros' fate depends on the Cubs (who you might argue put them in such a dire situation to being with...with an alley-oop assist from Hurricane Ike and Bud Selig.)
As much as it might disgust me to root for the Cubs, if you are an Astros fan your fortunes lie, in large part, in the hands of the Chicago Cubs. With 4 games to go for the Mets and Brewers and 5 for the Astros, the following needs to happen for the Astros to force a three-way for the Wild Card spot (in which case things get REALLY crazy):
Scenario 1:
Mets finish 1-3. Of these four games, 1 is against Chicago and three against Florida...all at Shea Stadium
Brewers finish 1-3. Of these four games, 1 game is against Pittsburgh and three against Chicago...all at Miller Park
Astros finish 5-0 (1 game vs Cincy, 3 vs Atlanta, 1 vs Chicago..all at Minute Maid)
Scenario 2: Astros could force a three-way tie if the Mets finish 0-4, Brewers finish 0-4 and Astros finish 4-1).
If one of the above scenarios occur, there would be a three-way tie...Due to the unlikelihood of the above happening, I'm not going to go into what would need to happen for the Astros to break that tie (see the thread about 'another unscheduled trip to Milwaukee?' regarding that scenario)
At any rate, may the "CUBS WIN" (at least until Monday
