GMC Yukon vs. Chevy Tahoe

Thinking of purchasing one or the other in the Dallas area. Anyone have any thoughts on the pros and cons of either? Also, does anyone have any thoughts on good dealerships? I was thinking of even going to carmax and buying one used. Does anyone have any thoughts on carmax?

same car, just find whichever one is cheaper... i know my cousin was shopping for a suburban and bought a gmc because it wound up being cheaper than the chevy

I bought a car recently at Carmax. I am now a Carmax fan. The one I bought had a problem that required several trips back before they could pinpoint the actual cause. I kept expecting grief from them each time I brought it back, but was always treated great and they promised they would keep working on it until they got it right. They finally ended up bringing in a third party from outside of this company to fix the problem.

I've got an 05 Tahoe with 6k miles on it I might be willing to sell. Of course the fact that I am willing to sell it after 6k miles probably is a pretty good indication that you don't want it. It has not been wrecked, but it has been to the shop 3 times for multiple problems each time. I would seriously look at an Expedition or something else. If my Taoe is any indication of how GM is making these thins today then you do not want one, and for God sakes if you must buy the Tahoe do not buy it used and buy an extended warranty.

I have an '01 Tahoe with 40K miles and no problems -- I bought it used with 20K miles in '03.

The Tahoe is better than Explorer and Durango -- which are the other SUV's I've owned.

have had my 04 tahoe for just over a year and have had no problems with it so far. gas mileage sucks, but other than that i love it.

Same as above. 04 Tahoe, and no probs the entire time I've owned it. 19K miles on it in the 17 months I've had it.

My best friend has had his Tahoe for 3 years and I'm not aware of any problems he has had with it. I have another friend that has had a Tahoe Z71 for about a year and it's already been in the shop a couple of times. I'm considering a Tahoe XL later in the year because my family size has grown, but we'll see.

Right now, I still have my trusty '96 Ford Explorer XLT that has around 120K miles on it and has not been in the shop once.

Well, it looks like the replies are all over the gamut. I am pretty sure I am going with a Tahoe over the Yukon. I am also pretty sure I am going to find a used one. The question is whether I will go through a dealership or carmax. The vote of confidence for carmax is encouraging.

Thanks for all the replies.

I bought a 2001 Z71 Tahoe used with 21k miles almost 3 years ago. It's now got 92k miles and I have had no problems.

I was thinking maybe the fact that mine was a Z71 had something to do with the issues, but I see mixed reviews on those too. Maybe mine just has a few kinks that have now hopefully been worked out. I dang sure hope so because the thing is pretty nice. I am just not used to taking a vehicle with so few miles to the shop this many times, and this is from someone who generally drives BMW.

I just posted this on Cactus Cafe, but GM is offering the Employee Discount to everyone for a month. Go for a new one.

My company bought me a Tahoe in June of 2002, and I've put 44,000 trouble-free miles on it.

A pleasure to drive.

What you need is a nice Toyota. PM me.
