i watched the swedish version and it was great, now hollywood is going to do their version of this cool book. two surprises for the two main roles.

rooney mara for the main role of lisbeth salander, she beat out the likes of natalie portman, scarlett johansson, kristen stewart and ellen page. this is said to be the most coveted role in hollywood in years.

and this side note, she has some famous relatives. her great grandfathers, art rooney and tim mara, founded the pittsburgh steelers and the new york giants.

daniel craig has just been signed supposedly for the male lead of mikael blomkvist

i don't see how this one can fail, great book, great cast, director is david fincher who directed "the curious case of benjamin button". the built in fan base of the book is enough to make this a smash hit even if it isn't that good, much like the twilight book series or the jason bourne series.

I loved the book series. In fact, I couldnt wait for book number 3 to get printed here, so bought it off UK Amazon at an inflated price (and you can tell its a UK printing because of certain words they use that would not be in the US version). Terffic reads. Page turners. I liked them so much I even went to a book signing by the translator!. It was at Murder By the Book in Houston, a great little bookstore. If you like this genre, you must go there -- you will absolutely love it.

Too bad the guy died before he was able to see the success his works became. The translators (husband and wife team, although only the husband got credit) had a few stories about him. Obviously leftist politically, even working with the commies in his youth. They also had some good stories about the film rights battle.

I have also seen two of the European films (all 3 are in the can and were all popular in Europe). I liked the books better but nonetheless it was very nice to see these characters come to life. The casting of Lisbeth was obviously the key, and the Swedish actress held up pretty well although I did imagine here a little younger. See pic. There is a good article on the Chronicle website about her if you search you will find it. The pace of the film was perhaps too fast. And I dont see how you could enjoy the movies without having read the books, but would be interested in hearing from anyone in that boat.

I went to the Houston premier at the River Oaks and the lower theatre (the bigger one) was packed. Definitely an older crowd. In fact, we guessed it may have been the oldest average age of any movie crowd we had ever been in. But was just a guess after eyeballing the audience.

Daniel Craig seems a great choice for Blomkvist. And I could see Ellen Page handling it well (see "Hard Candy"), more than the others named. I dont really know this actress but hope for the best. Usually I prefer the European originals but, with this series, I am happy they are taking a second bite at the apple in the US. With these books, the more the merrier. I have no idea how it will come out, or be received, but I will be there for sure.

I had never heard of her but the stuff about who her grandfathers are is cool so I looked her up. Turns out she has a really good charity she founded. It is called, Faces of Kibera. Here is more per wiki.

---------------------------------------

Faces of Kibera

Mara oversees the charity Faces of Kibera, which provides housing, food, and medical care for orphans in Kibera, a slum in Nairobi, Kenya where approximately 1 million people live in a single square mile. The charity's goal is to build an orphanage in the region, for which 6 acres of land have been purchased.[3] The charity auctions memorabilia from the Steelers and Giants, as well as training camp events on eBay to raise money.[5]

Mara visited the area as a volunteer, at age 21, and was moved to help the orphans, many whose parents have died from AIDS and HIV-related illnesses. She began the charity due to her frustration with, according to Mara, the growing number of nonprofits that are just business opportunities. "The people who need help aren’t really getting it. So I started my own", she told Interview magazine in 2009.[15] Mara was not really working yet when she started the charity, so now finds it challenging to balance her charity work with her acting career. "I need to do both; I can't just do acting,“ she stated to The Journal News.[3]

I think it is great that she uses her contacts with the football teams to generate money and that the teams are okay with it and help. I am sure that this role will land her a lot more publicity and an opportunity to get the word out for her project in Kenya. More power to ya!

this movie will make a TON of cash, it already has a built in fanbase like harry potter, twilight and jason bourne. even if the film is marginal it will still make a ton of money.

i bet its the highest grossing film of next year and i bet it will be pretty good, at least as good as the swedish version which i loved.

It's being remade because they can make serious money -- can't blame them. The Swedish version was an art house offering in the US, so it only had $9.8 million in US sales (with $93 million elsewhere). In Austin, you had to go to the Arbor, which really sucks as a theater. A "US" version will presumably have much higher sales. FOr one thing, the Swedish version is subtitled (though the subtitles were pretty well done so it wasn't an issue for me), and I know a lot of people won't go to movies with subtitles

they are giving the same treatment to Let the Right One In, another recent Swedish hit. People who refuse to read subtitles are going to miss some great movies in their lifetime.

I honestly didn't like the Swedish movies much, but the books are some of my favorites, so I'm looking forward to seeing a US version of the movie.

There is a rumor going around that there is one more book floating around. Some think Larsson wrote 3/4 of a book before dying and are in Larsson's longtime girlfriend, Gabrielsson. She didn't make any money off the first three since they weren't married and she may try and get the 4th finished and release it herself.

Girl looks good too!

Supposedly, Larsson's girlfriend has his laptop, which contains the mostly complete 4th book, and the outlines for the following 5 or 6 others.

Mara looks like the general mental picture I had of Salander. Don't know nothing about her acting.

I may not be a fan of US remakes of foreign films, but hell: Finchner? Daniel Craig? How 'bout some Max Von Sydow as Henrik Vanger? Yes f'n please. If they were hauling Michael Bay to direct, I'd suggest going Gone with the Wind
on the Sony lot, but Finchner is a great choice.
