Girl pitcher using Niekro knuckler

Kind of a cool story, but am I wrong that throwing a knuckleball at 13 years old may not be the best thing for her arm? Interesting to see how far she can go.

I'm not aware of any unusual strain that a knuckler would put on an arm. The delivery is generally like an overhand fastball, at least mine was.

Kids and adults both hurt their arms trying to throw curveballs, thinking that the more violently they jerk their arm, the more the ball will move.

When I visited Cooperstown with Cochamps Jr. back in May, the HOF had a special artifacts exhibit on the knuckleball that day. They told us this story, and it is really cool. The Niekros did not share their advice on the knuckler with many.

Excellent story. At 13 she must take care of her arm,elbow, etc. Her fastball is 60 mph.

The knuckleball takes almost nothing out of your arm. You don't want to impart any spin on the ball -- when it spins, it gets hit. Hard.

You want no spin, so the humidity and wind currents will make it dance like a bumblebee.
