Gibbs transferring

Another one-and-done, sort of. Barnes can't catch a break. I was counting on Gibbs' contribution off the bench next season. I think this reflects the sad state of the Texas basketball program. The head coach has little credibility among his players. They don't trust him to be loyal to them or develop them. How sad.

Please support your speculations on this.

Word is that Gibb's father is sick. And with Kabongo staying another year and Felix coming in, Gibbs wouldn't get much time at pg. At two there is Lewis, McClellan and the newly signed Holland that Gibbs would have to compete with, it looks to me he is transferring to get playing time elsewhere and to be closer to family.

Gibbs wouldn't be transferring now if if he felt that the coaches had given him an opportunity to develop last season. It's somewhat like the Jevan Snead situation. Gibbs was underutilized. Now he needs to compete with an incoming freshman who might be slightly better than he was last year, but he probably doesn't have the confidence that he can beat him out for the back-up spot. Besides, the back-up spot amounts to a mop-up role.

Gibbs probably came here thinking Kabongo would leave after one year and things haven't panned out for him. Kabongo got all the PT and he barely got any. Should Kabongo stay for his junior year, wouldn't Felix transfer, too? The program has little continuity and I think the coaching staff is to blame.

NorthernNJHorn, sounds like you are speculating on a lot. Why is Gibbs afraid to compete for the back-up job? Did he say something that wasnt printed?

I admit my sentiment was based on speculation mostly. Also, I appreciate the restraint displayed by other posters since none of them got nasty.

Gibbs was a highly touted recruit. He had backed out of his commitment to Maryland because of the retirement of its coach. He could have gone to schools like Notre Dame or Louisville instead of Texas. He came to Texas because of his family's relationship with an assistant coach at Texas.

Given the talent level and personal relationship, he's the type of player who should stay on. It's frustrating to see the program lose players like him prematurely. I don't know much about Felix, but I imagine his learning curve will be just as steep as any other freshman.

He would be one of the better shooters on the team next season and I'm sorry to see him go. I wish him nothing but the best.

Perhaps he is just homesick and misses his family. The following is his own words and I have no reason to doubt what he says.

I don't see the coaching staff being to blame here. He was going to Maryland to play for a specific coach, that didn't pan out, his friend said, hey we got a spot, he saw what we recruited last year and how young we were? He knew the competition was going to be stiff this year.

He mentions it is not about basketball, what am I missing? I don't think Barnes ran him off....
